Looking for a decent (under $250) turntable.

My son has been buying records. And I was about to dig out my old turntable for him. It is an original Rega Planar 3 w/a Rega arm. I don't remember the cartridge.

But I'd like to get him something at least semi-automatic and maybe a feature or two. Especially ease of set up and maybe a cartridge pre-installed.

I've been out of it so long, I don't really know what's decent.

Hmm, the RP3 is a $1000 giant killer. And you want a cheap one instead? I'll swap my old Yamaha for the RP3! Mine hasn't been used since....Saturday. If you had the right Yamaha receiver, it was even remote controlled. I'm actually trying to plan for an upgrade to a Rega.

You can't go wrong on the low end with Denon & Marantz. Or Audio Technica makes pretty well regarded tables with all sorts of features like reverse play, USB for easy digital recording, remote control, etc. Not sure any of these quite make your $250. needledoctor.com if you want to shop online.

I realize my RP3 is great sounding. But son (nor I) have the set up to appreciate it and, like I say I'd rather get him at least semi-automatic. I know at $250 it would sound as good as the Rega. I'm fine with that. Just looking for something decent and ease of set up without going total junk.

Check out the USB section at needledoctor, I'll bet you'd like one of those for this purpose.
