What am I doing wrong?

My question relates to the anamorphic squeeze trick. I've searched the forum and found several useful posts regarding how this is done, but I must be doing something wrong. I put in an anamorphic disc and marked off the actual screen size. I then changed my dvd player to 16x9 mode and finally I reduced the vertical size of my t.v. screen to match the actual area that I marked off. The problem I'm having is when I turn the t.v. off and then on again (to exit service mode) the picture still looks squished and distorted. Is there something I'm missing or not doing correctly? If it helps I have a 46' RCA RPTV. Thanks in advance.
