... and I hate having to walk all the way to the dvd player to operate it. (I know I'm lazy, but aren't we all?) I don't want to spend all that money on an expensive universal remote. I'm only looking for a cheap replacement remote that can work on a DVD player only, I don't care about working a TV, stereo, VCR, etc.; just a DVD player.

Any suggestions?

Check the manuals or back of the packaging of one of those 3 in 1 remotes. See what they say about what types of components they will run. I tried to replace a remote from a reciever once and they wanted $150. Forget it....so I know what you mean. The universal remotes are pretty cheap. Good luck.

I've been using the Radio Shack 15-1994 ($29) for a few months now. It controls my: VCR, TV, receiver, DVD, CD, and digital cable box, and could control one more component.

It's a learning remote, and can handle macros. It also has backlit buttons. (Very nice while watching movies )

I've been very pleased with it so far.

Another vote for the Radio Shack 15-1994. I bought a Philips DVD player for $50 at Good Guys w/ no remote and no manual. I spent a lot of time looking at universal remotes and this remote (along with the all in one 7) are great values that are very flexible. Check out remote central to find codes galore (the manual that came with the remote was next to worthless).

Does the Radioshack remote control component right out of the box or does it need to learn the commands.

You'll need to program it, but it's REALLY easy to do.

Good luck.
