Sony STR-DB940 or STR-V333ES? And where can I find the best price?

I am trying to decide between the Sony STR-DB940 and the Sony STR-V333ES for use in a HT system that will be running five NHT SuperOnes and a sub. I'm kinda leaning towards the DB940 due to the fact that it runs about $100 cheaper - does anyone have any opinions? Also, where would be the cheapest place to buy these items?

Difference in es model versus dbr is minimal, es has longer warranty and bigger shell, dbr is basicall built on the same platform. I tested out both models and went with the dbr as price was $430.00.

Definetly go with the ES receiver! It has longer warranty (5 years) more features, much better amps and it is much more then minimally better then the DB receiver! Don't get me wrong the DB receiver is a nice receiver but it is hardly in the ES's class.

There is no doubt in my mind that you should go with the es. You get way more bang for your buck for only an extra $100. I have owned the 555es for several months now and have been extremely pleased. My only gripes are the LCD remote is basically useless and gigantic, and it runs hot after 2 hours of loud dvd watching. You can't beat the 5 year warranty and the virtual matrix 6.1 is a nice new feature. Here is a link to the best price I could find on the 333es which is $518 http://www.speedandsound.com/sonstrv333es.html. Hope this helps.

I think the Sony ES line would work better with NHT speakers.
NHT's aren't too efficient so you will want the better amps in the ES line that possibly provide provide more current and power.
I would say 100wattsx5 would be the minimum to look for when you run SuperOnes

Does the ES333 also have the bass management feature that the DB940 has? The DB940 will allow you to set the bass redirection frequency at 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180Hz. I know the V444ES, V555Es will allow bass redirection from 40-180Hz in 10Hz increments, but I'm unsure of the ES333.
Since I would like more control of bass redirection, I might have to go with the DB940 if the ES333 had a fix bass redirection frequency.

I have the 333 and am very pleased with it. I considered spending the $$ on a 6.1 setup, but don't have room for the extra rear center. The virtual matrix 6.1 is good enough for me. The 333 does offer the 10 db bass redirection that the 444 and 555 offer. The only problems are as mentioned...the confusing remote and the receiver can run a little hot. Most Sony's run hot though. Just give it room to breathe and you should be fine.
I would go with the ES. I looked at both and the build quality and 3 year longer warranty was worth the extra $100. I got mine at J&R for $525. The price matched Oade Brothers. Good luck.

There is no way in Hell you got a STR-V555ES for $ 565.00! The dealer cost is a couple hundred more then $565 alone! You can't even touch a STR-V444ES for that price.

I bought the DB940 a few months back and have been very happy with it. My only "complaint" is the 2 way remote is a little slow sometimes in bouncing the signal back and froth from the remote :Note to self turn this function off. I paid $412 at Soundcity.com ordered it on Tuesday at 3PM and received it at work the next day at 10 a.m. You need to call their 800 number as they are not an authorized dealer of Sony (i.e. no warranty) but you really can't beat their prices and we all know there are ways around the lack of warranty. I have all Cambridge Sound works speakers and it drives them VERY nicely. I believe the DB uses the heat sink and amp from the ES (not positive)so its comparable for cheaper money unless you are a true Audiophile.

Better still tell www.onecall.com about soundcity's price for the DB940 and get them to price match. I've had the db-940 since it first came out this year and haven't had any problems even when the windows are shaking to my favorite cds this unit doesn't get hot.

I would tend to disagree with you on this matter. You are thinking of the current 555es released by Sony which replaced the 777es. I think that Fred B. has the 555es that was replaced by the 444es. He still got a good price, but I got mine for $600 so he is not that far off.

How can you disagree with me when I have clearly stated a STR-V555ES which is the newest 555ES receiver? That's what I'm saying that there is no way he got this new receiver for a mere $565!
Also this thread deals with the DB and the "New" ES receivers so why would this person waste time by quoting amounts for olders receivers that are not in this discussion?

I understand what you are talking about, but he never said he had the STR-V555ES, he only said he got a 555es. I understand that the SRT-DA555ES is not the same as the SRT-V555ES. He was probably able to pick up one of the leftover STR-DA555ES which is why it was so reasonably priced. I do agree that we are off topic so I will cease with this convversation.
