Say you had a:
Panasonic DVD
Panasonic LD
Sony receiver
Pioneer VCR
Cable box
Magnavox TV

What are the chances one remote could handle all these? What should i look at? How does it work?

here is a good reference site:
http://www.remotecentral.com/

I have a Home Theater Master SL-9000 and it controls a TV, 2 DVD Players, VCR and a cable box fine. I still use the factory remote to control the receiver, but I am sure it would control that also.

But if you have $300-400 to spend on a remote and you can find one go for the Pronto though.

So that's a good one? I was reading the specs on this one and it seems to be a good budget alternative, but I don't know. Anyone have any experience with Jensen remotes or the SC570 in specific?

Check out remote central. Also, while you are there, look for info on the Radio Shack 1994 (it will be in the universal remotes forum, I think). This is one of the most versatile button remotes around. It has lots of built in codes, advanced codes you can use and is a learning remote. The manual says it can only learn on a few buttons, but it can learn on almost any. It is about 40 bucks, but it is frequently on sale for 30. The best value you will find in a universal remote.

Panasonic 32" TV
Toshiba VCR
Dish Networks Sat.
Sony 30ES Rec.
Sony 560D DVD
JVC 501 DVD(POS that I only use for CD's and most of the times it can't even finish those before it chokes)

I got this on Sunday http://www.remotecentral.com/vl900/index.html

Great remote, has 3 system buttons that you can program a series of steps( mine turns on the DVD player, Reciever, and sets the TV input) The wife loves this feature.

You can also set some of the buttons to one touch TV channel buttons for your favorite channels.

Very nice Remote, got it for $60 at BestBuy

I've got the Marantz universal remote which is the same as the Phillips pronto. Its fabulous! I've downloaded many of the configs from remote central and have macros which fire everything up or down as I require. I wouldn't be without it.

I use the Radio Shack 15-1994 to control:

Toshiba CZ36V51 36" TV
Sony DVP-C660 5-Disc DVD Player
Pioneer CLD-704 Laserdisc Player
Kenwood VR-309 DD & DTS Receiver
Philips Magnavox Stereo VCR

While it can't be beat for the price ($29), I must admit that I have maxed it out and for the LD player it only has enough memory left for a few functions. Still, it's a great remote. If you happen to use a Kenwood receiver then be advised that Rat Shack left out all the Kenwood codes so everything has to be learned which really eats up the memory.

Oh, no ...no... no...

It's not a learning remote. A MINIMUM feature for a useful remote is the ability to learn commands not pre-programmed in memory, otherwise, you'll keep fishing out the old remotes.

Cinema7/15-1994 is an incredible remote for the money $25-$30. It's as functional as many $100+ remotes (pre-programmed codes, learning, macros, ability to customize ...) but has memory limitations. W/6 devices, some of your devices will have bare-bone commands.

A SL-9000 is a good $100 option. Marantz's RC1200 or RC2000 MK ii in the $180-$250 range.

If you have a PDA (Pilot, Visor, etc ...), they make pretty decent remotes w/a download.

For little less than $300 at Mercata, the Porche of remotes is the Phillips Pronto/Marantz5000. There is no substitute.

If you are still interested, I have a Marantz RC2000 MK ii that I would be willing to part with. Drop me a note with a reasonable offer.

I second the vote for the R/S 15-1994. I love mine. You cannot possibly get a better remote for the price.

It's easy to program, and the macro learning capabilities are wonderful.

fixed the model number

Well, the remote that came with the Sony 820 HT in a box system pretty much controls everythign I have! Haven't tried it with the LD player yet but it has pretty good control of my DVD, VCR, and TV minus a few things here and there. I guess the cheapest solution is not to buy a new universal remote at all!
