closed captions on dvds

Am somewhat of a newbie on this....want to know how some closed captions are jumbled and off when watching certain DVDs (example: while watching an old show like Gunsmoke, the captions are spot on with no errors, then I put in more recent shows example: South Park season 14 or Lost season 3 and the captions are completely off. Can anyone tell me how to fix this or adjust anything? Thanks!!!!

How are they "completely off"? My Oppo BDP-93 garbles the captions on some discs, not sure if the problem is with my TV or player but the same discs decode fine using another player. Of course, you need an analog connection at 480i to access the captions, wish newer players would include an internal closed caption decoder so you wouldn't have to do that.

By completely off, I meant to say, words are garbled and not even close to what they are supposed to be. Some dvds decode properly but certain discs are off.

What brand and model TV?

What brand and model DVD player?

How are you connecting the DVD player to the TV?

Have you tried using different cables?
