I currently have a 27" Sony, and have never owned an RPTV, but REALLY
want a 16:9 set.

A local store has an open box TW40X81 for $1899--I hooked up a
dvd player through s-video and component and watched a few dvds-
Saving Private Ryan, Sleepy Hollow, and Planet of the Apes (first two
anamorphic/Apes is not).

The picture quality looked terrible compared to my 27" Sony at home--
very blurry images, nothing like the sharp lines I get on my home
set. The only thing I liked was the large size of the screen.

Furthermore, the blue crosshair on the convergence test is very, very
blurry, about 3x the width of the red crosshair (which is quite
sharp). Can the blue gun be refocused? (it seems to be just the
width, not the height)

Finally, the convergence was VERY bad unless the set was on for ~30-
60min. Is this normal for this set? When the set was off for a couple
min, and turned back on, the convergence went way off again, as if it
had never been warmed up in the first place.

At audioreview.com people describe this set as 'looking through a
window' but that wasn't my experience in the store at all.

I WOULD NOT BUY THIS SET.

Why?!?!?! This set can be had brand new for just maybe $200 more!!!!

This set could have been in the showroom for months straight on ALL day with the Contrast and everything else all the way up at 100%.

Buy a brand new one for roughly the same price.

Hmmm, you're right, it was a demo display. I don't have any experience with RPTV's, and didn't think being a demo mattered (as long as it works, right?) But after doing some reading since my first post and apparently there's a limited lifespan or something?

I would not buy it. Consumer Direct www.consumer-direct.com is advertising new ones for $1999 I think. Also you should be able to get a new one locally for only a few hundred more.

With the possibility it has the equivalent of a couple of years of home use already on it, it's just not worth the risk.
