I just bought a Sony 32" WEGA (w/o PIP), and am using component cables (Y, R, B) with my Toshiba SD-1200 DVD player.
I don't know what setting is the best for DVD viewing. On the WEGA, there are presets for the picture like "Vivid", "Movie" "Sports", etc. The "Movie" setting looks kinda dark and bland. Is that how it's supposed to be? On the other hand, the "Vivid" or "Standard" setting seems to bring out the grain in the video (like the dark scenes in Jurassic Park)....
so which setting should I choose?

I have a Sony 32FS12 and a Toshiba 2109 player. Using the 16:9 enhanced mode its the best picture I've ever seen on standard television, even better than direct view satellite.
I use the movie setting for DVD's, the standard setting for regular TV. I think I did lower the contrast setting a few notches for the standard setting though.

I have the same tv, and the 16:9 feature is awsome. you can get this by going to the menu of the tv once the dvd is in. go to display and switch it to enhanced 16:9.

Personally, I prefer the "Pro" setting. ("Vivid" the less.)
Even that there is too much red to my taste,
(but this is normal as all manufacturers set up their display this way.)
I also use component.
Edited to say that I have a 36XBR400.
I don't believe I have the "Sports" setting option.

You're best bet is to go buy/rent Video Essentials. It is a calibration disc that will help you properly set your TV settings. On my Wega, I calibrated the Movie setting using Video Essentials. It looks ALOT better when the TV is set properly. I highly suggest you use this (as I am sure the vast majority of posters here do as well).

The movie setting is the closet to ideal, but it still needs to be adjusted with Avia Guide to Home Theater, which is easier to use and has a few more video filters than Video Essentials. Movies are supposed to be a good deal "darker" and "softer" than what your used to seeing on tv. Check the picture the next time you're in the theater, you'll see it's much darker than what you're used to from cable or satellite tv.

I tend to agree. The "movie" option is the closest to being correct but is still not up to par. I used the Avia disc to calibrate my TV and it made a significant difference. The video quality is more "natural" looking now.
