Magnavox MWR 10D6 DVD Recorder Recording problems

I've owned this recorder for a few years now and haven't had any problems with it until recently.

All of a sudden I can put in a brand new DVD+R disc and try to record on it and I get an error message stating that "Can Not Record on This Disc" and below that is a bunch of letters and numbers "E 4 54037380"

I've tried a Lens Cleaner and even blew some air from a can into the machine.
I've tried multiple discs from the pack I have and get the same message.

It plays regular DVDs fine as well as finalized discs too.

Any ideas what is up?

Looks like a common error with several brands of Recorders, just do a search on google for 54037380. Here are a couple threads that talk about it:

videohelp.com
avsforum.com

Best bet is to probably try a different brand of DVD+R.

OK, I was able to record to a DVD+R last night. This morning I was able to edit the name of both the title and Disc itself, add chapters and an index picture.

Everything was going fine until I tried to finalize the disc and then I got an E 22 error.

I can play the disc fine in the recorder and still edit it, but I can't finalize it.

Any idea what the E 22 Error means?

I just put in a Memorex DVD+R disc and tried to record on that and got another error message, e 4 54040990.

It plays DVDs and burned DVDs just fine, but now I'm getting all of these error messages.

Any suggestions?

On a related note, if I can't finalize the discs can they be saved somehow. I don't want to lose these recordings. If I buy another Magnavox DVD recorded, would these un-finalized discs be able to work on that machine?

Could the blank DVDs have a problem? Perhaps a decent brand of blank DVD would work better. Memorex isn't what I would call decent.

I had a CD burner slowly go bad, it would read CDs ok but had trouble burning them. I think the burning laser was going out. This is when they cost over $900 so I wasn't going to just go buy a new one if I could avoid it.

I got a lens cleaning kit and it cleaned the laser lens enough that it was good for some more burns. You might try that.

I popped in one of those "Talking" lens cleaner a few times and still nothing.

Are there two lenses on a DVD Recorder and if so would the lens cleaner I used clean the recording one too?

The Memorex discs are fairly old ones, I even get the problem with Phillips DVD+r discs too. I would think that since Phillips/Magnavox is related or one in the same that their own discs would work without problem.

It'll have to wait though, I'm broke through the rest of the month.

Both lenses should be next to each other so they both should have been cleaned. I didn't remember from your original post that you had already tried that.

A computer may be able to read the non-finalized discs.

Try Taiyo Yuden discs. Nobody should ever buy anything but. So popular that some places started cheating and labeling crap discs with this name. Like fake Rolexes.

supermediastore.com is one place to buy them.

I second the Taiyo Yuden recommendation. They are unparalleled. The only other brand I would go with in a pinch is Verbatim, and even then only a certain type of theirs. It's really not worth considering anything else if you want consistent quality burns that last.
