I know - dont kill me - it's like buying a card based on the hood ornament, but!
The only way I can get some major HT stuff in our living room is if it's not big black ugly boxes for speakers. So - does anyone know of designer / nice looking speakers that also would play well? speaker price for 5.1 could be up to 4-5k, but definently doesnt have to http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/smile.gif Hope someone here can help a worthy cause. (Why did I just think of the guy who's wife cancelled his beatles box set from amazon...) |
Try B&W. Most of their speakers have a very different look when compared to traditional towers. Plus, they sound GREAT!

Have you considered the kind of speakers that could be mounted on the wall. Maybe someone could comment on the performance. I'm sure there's always some sacrifice in increasing the wife acceptance factor.

Yes, what is up with the Wife Factor.
I was looking at the Paradigm S-3 monitors (isn't that what they are called) and the Paradigm mini's for rears - they look decent too. But wall mounting might help - wont that give a wrong sound distribution though (with high hanging fronts and rears)? |
Whats B&W's website btw? http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/smile.gif
And can someone recommend a set (front, rear, center) for around $1500 + ? [This message has been edited by ravan (edited September 25, 2000).] |
If I am not mistaken a good set of B&W speakers is gonna run way over $1500. If you are interested in wall hanging speakers that look good try looking at the Acoustic Research Phantom line. They not only look great, but sound phenominal too and are only 3 inches thick.

How much is way over?
I need to get something thats bookshelf-size'ish? 2-3k is not impossible either. Of course I'll try and listen to the options. Thanks for the phantom tip, I'll check those out too! |

These are different and come in different colors. I don't know how good they sound though! I think they look kind of cool http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/smile.gif [This message has been edited by jumbojp (edited September 25, 2000).] |
In that price range I would say go with the Atlantic Technology's System 4.5. They are book shelf size, hang on the wall (or the ceiling with brackets.) and sound amazing. I have had them for a little more then a year and still can't believe how good they sound. And while they are the color black, it's a very glossy black. I can say without a doubt that you will be impressed.
