Optimal time to buy a TV?
I had a few sets in my Amazon cart that I was considering... one of them increased in price by 33% and the two others are no longer being carried.

Does this mean that the new models are in place and the opportunity to buy the old has passed? Is the optimal time to buy a TV right before the arrival of the new ones... and thus, did I miss the opportunity?

Re: Optimal time to buy a TV?
I bought that 63" Samsung on Amazon. I had a couple in my cart but used camelcamelcamel.com to notify me when the price dropped to a certain level. (< $2300) I quickly bought one when I was notified and the price went back up that day to $2600. I think now is the optimal time. You might get lower prices to come depending on the set but then again the old models might sell out.

On the TV I bought, I couldn't even get $2300 with curbside delivery. Amazon unboxes and places it wherever it needs to go. Which is good since I was home alone on delivery day and the thing is over 100 lbs.

Well it depends on what you want. For the cheapest price, almost always the two weeks before Super Bowl.

For me, it's the night the old tv breaks.

The TV I bought was way cheaper when I bought it than before the Super Bowl.

Most of the clearances have come and gone, so you're roughly two to four weeks too late. Watch Slickdeals, though, and you might see the occasional one pop up.

The Super Bowl thing is largely a myth, in my experience. Prices are dropping at that point, but continue to drop after the Super Bowl until the old stock is gone.

Before super bowl has the best overall sales. But clearance on Amazon or other places will generally beat local sales, esp things like Amazon daily deals. You just have to time that right, whenever your chosen brand puts out a new generation. Black Friday will also have some good deals.

I've had half a dozen TVs in my Amazon cart for several months. The prices never really dropped before the Super Bowl™. I, too, think it's a myth. People will run out and buy a TV for the Super Bowl™, so why lower the price? The prices before Christmas were much lower than they were before the Super Bowl™.

Amazon changes prices during the day for a few hours at a time. You really need to use a tracking service like camelcamelcamel to follow their pricing exactly. Here is the TV I bought. The only real drop is when I bought it around Valentines day. (Green is Amazon.)

Re: Optimal time to buy a TV?
Interesting. Amazon also is lower during the month before super bowl according to that chart. I would not have expected that from a website, and it may not be true across the board, on every TV. Web sales do not always follow the same tired patterns that b&m stores do.

It's impossible to buy a tv in the past, and in the future for that matter. I would say that the present is the best and only time to buy one.

Also keep an eye on Amazon Warehouse if you don't mind open box. I had a "Like New" Samsung LN37C550 sitting in my cart for months now. A little over a week ago it dropped down to $370.99 and I ordered it. Now it's back up to $502.99. The TV just arrived yesterday practically brand new.
