Just wondering - I've put off buying a receiver for so long, now that EX is out there, are there any good receivers that support this feature (along with DTS)?

Only thing I've heard of under $1000 is the Outlaw receiver which people seem to like from the reviews I've read.

Since DD6.1 has a matrixed rear surround in it's current iteration (so does DTS6.1 I believe), you can simply make your own with a decent pro-logic receiver. Take the LR and RR pre-outs from your DD receiver and run them into the L/R inputs of your Pro-Logic receiver. Turn on 3-Stereo or Pro-Logic mode (if your receiver doesn't have 3-Stereo) for EX. Switch to regular Stereo for normal DD or DTS.

However with this configuration you will not be able to pick up the "flags" for the matrixed information contained within the left rear and right rear channels. Essentially all you would be doing is remixing the existing sonics sent to the rears, not extracting the added channel contained within a DD EX mix. Smart Devices makes an SRS (Circle Surround decoder) device that does what you describe with better results and channel separation (Pro Logic tends to collapse to the center too much) and is an attractive alternative. Around $300 and enhances all existing 5.1 mixes

I would not jump on the EX bandwagon right away. Dolby Digital EX is essentially DD5.1 + matrixed center rear. DTS currently has two versions of 6.1 sound: DTS-ES Matrix 6.1 and DTS-ES Discrete 6.1. The latter is the best surround format available, but only the Denon 5800 receiver has it. Onkyo just announced DTS-ES Dis 6.1 upgrades to their receivers.
To add to the confusion, DTS has another surround format called Neo:6, a matrix algorithm for deriving 6ch from any 2ch source. Then there is Pro-logic 2, but that one's not important.

See...You can buy DD-EX and DTS-ES matrix 6.1 receivers right now. But why would you when it is inevitable that by X-mas, there will be more components with DTS-ES discrete 6.1 included. And you can bet Dolby won't sit on their asses until they come up with their version of discrete 6.1.

The safest bet is to buy a quality DD/DTS receiver or processor with RS-232 jack for future upgrades.

Thanks for the replies - I'm a bit short on cash now, so I'll probably end up waiting until after the Christmas season to buy a receiver so I'll make sure to look into 6.1 Discrete then...

Could someone elaborate on the RS-232 jack? I haven't heard of this feature.

Denon AVR3801 (suppose to be out soon) -- Features somewhat similar to the Denon AVR5800 (i.e., has 6.1 discrete), no THX, less power, but much cheaper (US$1200?)

As for RS-232 for future proofing...I am not so sure about this, a bit too general IMO.
