Currenlty my HT consists of a 19inch stereo TV, and a 5 Disk DVD player.
i want to eventually get a reciver and upgrade to a surround sound (but i don't have a thousand bucks lying around)

So i was wondering I've seen the powered subwofer setups around, and thinking it might be cool.

Would it be worth it to me to get a powered sub until i can afford a Real system?

If so what kind would be good (keep in mind this thing is going to need to run off my DVD player)

There are many subs you can add to your system for the LFE. but...

If your serious about building an "Home Theatre" though you'll want to look at more then just an affordable sub.

The speakers should match for a smooth sound field. The sub is no exception.

Find a system you like and save up or buy a few at a time as $$$ allows.

Still suggesting the purchase of a powered sub from a speaker line you plan on getting in the future.

yep..a piece at a time. that's how most ppl do it. maybe start with a good receiver (and borrow a pair of speakers to test it). then a pair of front speakers. then a matching surround, center, sw, etc. maybe it'll take a long time, but you will satisfied for a much longer period with the result

i dont have a sub yet but was looking around at costco yesterday and found a KLH 120 watt subwoofer for $99.

I didnt get it because i have no idea if that is a good brand/price/etc but if anyone else has any thoughts about it....? Seems like a decent deal...

IMO, I think that you have to spend at least a few hundred dollars for a good sounding sub. A good performing sub should at least reach the mid 20 Hz range IMO with good clean output.

The Mission 700AS can be purchased for US$300-$350 street. Some measurements of the 700AS by Nousaine are: LFE 102 dB at 25 Hz, averages 108.1 dB between 25-62 Hz (10% distortion, 2 metres). Recently, I had purchased two of these subs for US$650 including 14% taxes and shipping. So far so good. Excellent bang for the buck IMO.
