Questions:
1) Floorstanders or bookshelf?
2) KLH, any good?

Answers
1) Floorstanders are generally better for music and movies, but up to a certain price point it makes sense to consider bookshelf speakers.
2) No. No good.

There's really no such thing as the "best speaker." Personal preferences, associated equipment, and room acoustics combined with the manufacturer’s design choices all play important roles in how a speaker sounds. And there's lots of variability in sound in each price range.

In choosing a speaker, its a good idea to listen to a range of choices in your price range at a dealer (hopefully with the same electronics you'll use at home). Take some familiar music and DVD's with you to the stores so that you can compare the same music/movie segments on each speaker.

Once you've narrowed down your selection, arrange for an in home evaluation. Often times, sound elements which excite on the show room floor, become annoying over time.

W/o knowing your price range or associated equipment, some brands worth considering: NHT, B&W, PSB, Energy, Linn, Sound Dynamics (the RTS-3 bookshelf is nice), Revel, Klipsch, and Mirage. Plus, lots of others---there are many good choices on the market.

Finally, I don't completely agree w/ stevevt regarding bookshelf v. floor standers. You will find excellent and terrible examples of both. I'd much rather have a well designed bookshelf than a mediocre tower any day. In general a larger speaker will have more bottom end than a smaller speaker, but small speakers tend to image better. Small speakers properly mated to a sub, can provide excellent sound, often at a lower price point. As stated above, there is no perfect speaker.

Happy hunting.
