If I do not have an Optical cable running from my DVD player to my reciever will I not be able to hear the DD and DTS sound? And if so how much better will the sound be when I hook this cable up. I purchased my first reciever the weekend from Circuit City, a Sony STRDE445 and I think it works great. Plus I can take it back at any time with the receit and upgrade it to a beeter model and they just take the price i paid for the reciever I have now from the new one that I want to get. Is this a good model receiver? I couldn't find a review on it at audioreview.com. Any help would be greatly appreciated. http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/smile.gif

Receiver's are really a personal preference. Some people don't like Sony but others do. The main thing is that YOU are happy with it. As far as the optical connection goes, if you don't have this or a digital coax connection, than you probably aren't enjoying Dolby Digital or DTS (shame on you http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/smile.gif ) Run out right now and get one of these cables and enjoy your first DD or DTS experience!!! I recommend ordering a Big NewYorker from Pizza Hut and using the $10 at 800.com towards the Recoton $11.95 optical cable. I just got it and it sounds great. Cheap name brand won't matter with digital.
