I'm noticing a problem with my dvd player (under 2 months old) -- sometimes the dvd skips. I know that a couple months back someone else stated that they had this same problem. Is this a common problem? Anything I can do about it other than toss it?

The 709 is a model that was very buggy. Maybe a firmware upgrade could help.

I've read in the past that the unit can overheat and cause this.

Have you played Atari today?

Thanks for the info -- was hoping I wouldn't have to contact Samsung about the firmware but (sigh)okay and overheating is something I hadn't heard about before...

check the review on www.audioreview.com and you will find many unhappy voices !!!

there must have been a reason why hifi.com would give them away free

though, I have one too and have had NO problems yet.

The worst mistake I ever made was buying a Samsung 709. The damn thing skipped all through Highlander, it had other skipping problems during movies like Tron, Star Trek 6, and lets not even talk about its incompatability with the Matrix.

I had checked on www.cnet.com or www.productopia.com re the 709 -- anyway, one of them said to play the Matrix to see if a firmware upgrade was needed. I played the Matrix (which I absolutely love) and there was only a slight glitch once. Oh well -- I'll still try the upgrade and see if it helps. The skipping seems random...

Samsung 709's have problems with over heating. it usually occurs when it is close to other equipment or in a cabinet with no air flow. The problem will most likely occur at about 1 hr into the movie.
Take a look at the forums and FAQ at www.709online.com
That site will give u lots of help
