I have a Toshiba 3108 with firmware upgrade V2.04 -R1 and it plays ID4 and the abyss without any difficulty. If you have this firmware upgrade or later you shouldn’t have any trouble with these two titles or many DVD’s for that matter. I have 650 in my collection and have only had problems with one title – Night Stalker.
A word of caution for all you folks sending in your DVD players in for a firmware upgrade to the Toshiba Service Center. The policy was, and I still believe is, that you will NOT receive the same player that you send in for the upgrade. They will ship you a "refurbished" player with the latest upgrade. That's not too bad if you're sending them a unit that you've had for a while, but if you have a new player you may receive a crappy looking unit with some extra mileage on it as a replacement. I know, because it happened to me. Once I received the replacement I spent days on the phone complaining to Toshiba management about the piece of crap they sent me, after sending them a brand new player. Finally, they gave in and reluctantly replaced the crappy unit with a new one. BEFORE you send your unit in make sure that you contact them and find out exactly what they’re going to replace it with.

DVD Talk Hero
I have the 3108 firmware version 1.0
First problem I noticed was the ID4 "Check Disc" error and now the new "Rammstein Live in Berlin" DVD gives the same error. Fortunately my new roommate has an RCA which plays both discs just fine (and his machine was about $300 cheaper than mine!)
