7.1 output to 6.1 receiver: possible?

I'm considering of buying a blu-ray player with 7.1 analoge output. I currently have a Yamaha 6.1 receiver. Is it possible to use a 1M-2F RCA cable to hook up the SBL and SBR outputs from the blu-ray player to the SB input of the receiver?
I don't really see why not but so far the threads I've read mentioned the only way is to hook it up without the SBL and SBR (essentially go 5.1 to 5.1)

Thanks!

You can go 6.1 to 6.1, and it should be fine. When setting up a 7.1 source for a 6.1 receiver, I think it's usually the SBL output that's used. The BD player will send the audio accordingly. You can double check to see if there's a setting in the speaker setup of the BD player, to disable the SBR output. If so, that will ensure the audio is sent right.

The 2-1 RCA cable should also work since it is analog audio. Or, since there isn't that much detail in 7.1, anyway, you could just run one of the wires and skip a channel. You won't notice something missing.
