Anyone else having Optical Block problems on their Sony RPTV?

Mine has started to show some greenish tint to it the past few days. I've had the set for about 2 and a half years and replaced the bulb just awhile back. I noticed that the picture started to get a little odd in color just a few days ago so I decided to do a little research and this seems to be a widespread problem. I called and they have already authorized someone to come out and look at it and will pay for parts and replacement if it turns out to be the optical block that is causing the color problems.

Re: Anyone else having Optical Block problems on their Sony RPTV?

I've had optical block problem on an old Sony RPTV. It was a 42"... can't remember the model number now. Anyways, I would either have red or green orbs on the screen. I had a service plan through Best Buy, so I called to cash in. They sent out a service guy to replace the part. The new part had the same issue, just on different parts of the screen. Then again. Same thing. Then again. After the third optical block was installed and had the same problem, I called customer service and told them I wanted a new TV as per the service plan agreement (if you need to have the TV repaired more than three times, then you get a new TV). Best Buy tried to pull some shit with me... "Oh, well, since it was the same part replaced three times, it only counts as ONE service call." F that. I had to take days off from work, I had to deal with a crummy picture for months, so I just kept going up the chain to a sup, a manager, home office, that sorta thing. I eventually got my TV, and I was told that I was right that it was all bullshit I was going through.

Anyways, Sony had acknowledged (if I remember correctly) that their RPTV optical blocks on certain sets would start showing defects after a while. Since every one I had replaced in the TV had the same issues, I can only imagine that this is a widespread issue with any of the optical blocks that have been sitting on their warehouse shelves for years now. It's probably why they got away from RPTV's in the first place.

I think you're in for the long haul, as in, you probably will have to wait until your TV is 'fixed' a few times, and you probably won't have a good result on either of those repairs. I'm not sure what kinda service plan you have, but don't let them screw you around.

If it's an SXRD set, Sony extended the warranty through the middle of this year. I haven't had any problems, but here is the e-mail I got after registering my warranty:

Dear Valued Sony Customer,

Models: KDS-50A2000, KDS-55A2000, KDS-60A2000, KDS-R60XBR2, KDS-R70XBR2

As part of the Sony commitment to quality, Sony is announcing that it is extending the limited warranty (parts and labor), in the United States, on the optical block of the above-referenced 2006 model SXRD televisions until June 30, 2010, regardless of purchase date. For any customer who requires repair of the optical block on one of the affected models, Sony will cover the cost of the optical block repair (parts and labor) at no charge through June 30, 2010. This extended warranty does not apply to the replaceable projection lamp or the other parts that may be used in the televisions.

Sony is also announcing that for any owner of these model televisions who paid out-of-pocket expenses on or before December 31, 2008 for an estimate or repair service to replace the optical block, Sony will reimburse the customer by mail for the cost of the optical block and the labor expense to replace it, subject to certain conditions. To receive reimbursement, please follow completely the directions on the claim form for reimbursement; all claims must be postmarked by January 31, 2009. See the claim form for complete terms and conditions.

All other terms of the Sony limited warranty continue to apply. Sony utilizes a network of hundreds of qualified independent third-party servicers to perform in-home television warranty service. Sony, through its authorized servicer network, will endeavor to repair your set within 30 days of your first contact. For diagnosis, warranty service, or if you are not provided a repair within 30 days, please contact Sony at (888) 649-7669.

Sincerely,

Sony Electronics

Re: Anyone else having Optical Block problems on their Sony RPTV?

Thanks for the heads up you guys. I just started noticing a green tint to almost everything. Things that are supposed to be grey or black seem to be off because of this. Everything just has a green haze to it. I'll call one of the given repair places today to find out about getting this fixed. Hopefully the replacement optical blocks have the problem fixed or the cycle will simply repeat itself in a year or two.

Hmmm, I think I have the same TV. No issues yet, but I wonder if I should get it replaced as it appears that it is a known problem. Not sure if I have the A2000 or the A2020

Re: Anyone else having Optical Block problems on their Sony RPTV?

My 50" E2000 started having optical block issues with a red line across the top of the screen. Sony gave me some options from fixing it for free or getting a smaller LCD Flat Panel for free to upgrading to various Flat Panel models for a fee. Since this was a bedroom TV I opted to get the new smaller 40" Flat Panel and haven't looked back. It is a lot better than my E2000 and I got to keep my old set as well. Apparently now the 'replacement set' offers have dried up and SONY is now only fixing optical block issues on the E2000 line.

The greenish tint is really pissing me off and no matter how I adjust the color and everything else it seems to return.

The repair guy has ordered the part and will be here on the 19th. Hopefully this will give me some years of use of this set. The green is really pissing me off.

Re: Anyone else having Optical Block problems on their Sony RPTV?

You can try to calibrate all you want, it's not going to make the green go away. No amount of overcompensation will fax that. There's something in the optical block that's not displaying the correct picture for you, something that's not correctable.

What pisses me off more than anything, is that SONY knew about the defect in their optical blocks before they even sold the TV's, and what'd they do? Did they scrap it? Nope. They offer a 'we'll replace it' program warranty, which means nothing since most of the optical blocks will eventually fail, and then they get out of selling RPLCD HDTV's. They robbed us. They robbed you, they robbed me, and I'll never buy another Sony TV again. I bought a Samsung that I'm perfectly content with, and I think I'll continue to buy their TV's in the future.

I hope the new block at least gives you a little more mileage, because if it works and works well, then I advise you start saving money for a new TV now, and buy a new one as soon as you have the chance.

Re: Anyone else having Optical Block problems on their Sony RPTV?

My 46" Sony A2000? I think, had to have it's optical block replaced last year. It was only two years old. My parents 42" just went out last week and Sony would only give them a $450 credit even though they had bought an extended warranty. It was 4 years old. So they replaced it with a 47" Vizio LED-LCD. And my friends 60" SXRD has had green spots on it but they went away. So in my experience the Sony RPTV's are junk. Hopefully the new optical block in mine will last a few years. Sony basically told my parents they could replace the optical block but it will go bad eventually.

How can you tell if it is going? Mine still looks excellent. Is is REALLY noticeable or something you have to be looking for?

My tv had a reddish bar on the top of the screen. My parents had a big yellow blob in the middle. My friend has green blobs.

I have a kds50a2000 and:
- bought November 2006
- optical block replaced September 2008 (22 months)
- extended warranty end june 2010 (21 months from replacement)

talked to someone at Sony and he said the block was re-engineered, but only when pressed to answer my question directly. Is he lying?

I also emailed two of the law firms involved in a class action lawsuit that includes this model and is pending. here is the site for info on that:
- sonysxrdtvclassaction web site, contact lawyers at

- and write to:

include the following:

1. Request to commitee
2. Model and Serial number
3. Copy of bill of sale (or note on letter that I cannot provide one)
4. Reference number (i got this from CS) and
5. Telephone, email and home address.

i would contact both firms at sonysxrdtvclassaction for advice, and consider joining the suit. it apparently went well for the XBR1 owners.

i do not believe that the block was re-engineered based on what I've read.

i fully expect my set to show symptoms again in 6 months to a year.

anyone else have info on time to failure? is it usually about 2 years?

Re: Anyone else having Optical Block problems on their Sony RPTV?

My friend has a 50" SXRD from '06 (I think) and Sony just offered him a 46" LCD for free or a 55" LCD for $225. He's taking the 55" and selling his old set.

DJ_Longfellow 02-13-10 07:50 AM

Re: Anyone else having Optical Block problems on their Sony RPTV?

I did look this up....I have the Sony 60A2020, so I would assume my TV does NOT suffer from the Optical Block issue? I was getting excited to get a 55" LCD for $225 :)

Just curious, how did he go about getting the TV from Sony? Who did he call?

Also, is there a GOOD test to check for color issues? Like use a THX calibiration thing on the Disney discs or something better like Avia (I don't have that, but I suppose I could Netflix it or something).

Found this on Sony's website: (same as above, but for the 2020 models)

You know there is a problem when you're watching a black and white show (Twilight Zone) and the picture is fucking green. They were supposed to come out yesterday and replace the engine but somehow fed-ex shipped the part to Oregon instead of Oklahoma. We rescheduled for this Wednesday so I'll let you guys know how it goes. I can't wait until this shit is fixed.

It better get fucking fixed. The whole sending it to Oregon bit has me wondering though. Especially when I have read about other customers not having their set repaired because either the part isn't available (yeah right) or the set being taken apart then discovering that they have the wrong optical block (yeah right).

Re: Anyone else having Optical Block problems on their Sony RPTV?

Well, they came out today and replaced the optical block. All was good for the first couple of hours and now it is getting triple images, upside down image and other problems. This is really pissing me off. If I had to pay the 1200+ dollar repair bill out of my pocket I would seriously be pissed right now but I am still pissed off. Now I have to wait until tomorrow to call the repair guys and go through this whole process again. Fuck Sony!

Re: Anyone else having Optical Block problems on their Sony RPTV?

It seems that I got a bum Optical Block replacement. It went out in about 3 hours. Now I have to wait until they get a new one and swap it out to even be able to use my set at all. FUCK!!!!!

dsa_shea 02-24-10 10:50 PM

Re: Anyone else having Optical Block problems on their Sony RPTV?

Well, they're coming out next Tuesday to try and replace it again but I couldn't wait so we went and bought a 42" LG LCD Flat Panel tonight and I really like it. If our other set does finally get repaired then the new one will end up hanging on our wall in the bedroom so it was a win win either way. Sony will make things right with me one way or another.

Re: Anyone else having Optical Block problems on their Sony RPTV?

Keep us up to date. I'm about to order a replacement bulb for my SXRD, which has never exhibited a problem. But I want to put a new bulb in it before the extended warranty runs out this summer.

I love the picture on the SXRD. It's too bad Sony didn't iron out their problems and stopped making them.

I think in some of the Sony Rear Projection lawsuits, Sony agreed to upgrade users to newer TVs when they had these problems.

May want to look into that instead of the repair circle jerk.

I talked with Sony about this but it seems like they have to "review the case" and there are steps that they have to take before they're willing to do an exchange for a fee. I would love to get a flat panel from them for a few hundred dollars.
