Are the DTS decoders on AV Receivers all the same?
A question to the more HT experts here, but are all the DTS decoders the same?
Just something I notice as I have 2 AV Receivers (a ONkyo 595 which I had for about 10 years now, and a Yamaha 663.)
Now something interesting I notice that when I used my older Onkyo, there was a straight out difference when using DTS over DD (as DTS was always much louder).
Now with my Yamaha 663, depending on what I play, I will have mixed results, depending on the movie (either some definitely louder, or mostly appear to be equal to DD in loudness). SO either the DTS decoder in my yamaha is not like the one in my older onkyo, or the DD decoder in my yamaha is better.
So what are peoples opinions of this? Or maybe this is how the modern AVR work today for many units?
Oh yeah in terms of power, my older ONkyo literally puts to shame my Yamaha 663

DTS tracks are typically louder than Dolby tracks on DVDs, that's true. It's a good question. I don't know if there are "better" decoders now aside from compatibility issues. For example, some receivers can't do DTS-ES or DTS 96/24, while others can, just like how there is Dolby Digital EX and the various forms of Pro-Logic, and that's not including the new HD audio formats.

I don't know if DTS decoders are different or not, but there are differences between the two receivers that will probably affect the quality of sound much more than decoders, like the DACs and amplification circuitry.
One thing that can affect the loudness of DD is if dynamic range compression is applied or not. You might want to check the settings for both to see if that's the case with one but not the other. There may also be settings that are applied to DD but not DTS, or vice-versa.
BTW, be careful not to confuse loudness with sound quality.

I would guess that everyone gets the DTS code, or whatever it is that makes up the decoder, straight from DTS (Digital Theater Systems). So, I also would think that the only differences would be if someone more recent got upgraded code. Then, everyone after that would get the same, until upgraded again. I could be wrong about this. It's just what I think happens, knowing how most stuff goes. You could write DTS an email, asking them. They'll probably tell you. http://www.dts.com/
