I noticed it at first with Dolby Prologic. I had gotten used to the rather weak surround sound on DVDs with only a 2.0 surround mix, but was blown away when I first played my Star Wars laserdisc. The Dolby Surround mix was so good it almost sounded 5.1. I have noticed it on other Laserdiscs as well. Of course most DVDs have 5.1 sound, so it is not that big of a deal. I got my first DTS laserdisc today and again noticed a difference. To me the DTS sound on the laserdisc sounded better than what I have heard on some DTS DVDs. I am not saying there was a huge difference, but I did notice something. Do laserdiscs generally have better sound than DVDs? I figured maybe it was because laserdiscs don't use compression. Any sound experts out there that know more about this?

Many feel that the sound on LDs (both Dolby Pro-Logic and dts) are really better than DVD's compressed Dolby Digital audio tracks. But depending on your HT gear, YMMV.

Found this from a forum chat with Jim Taylor.

I only have prologic on my LD player and DTS on my DVD. But comparing prologic to prologic, I do notice the surrounds more with my LD than with my DVD.

I recently got a LD player an a nice stack of LDs, and pro-logic/DTS on the LDs sound better than their counterparts on DVD. Can't say for DD yet because I'm waiting for my RF demod ot arrive http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/smile.gif

Well then at least others have noticed it. I don't have a demod yet either. I only have a few DD discs and I don't know if I want to drop $250 to listen to them in 5.1 sound. I am trying to pick up more DTS laserdiscs. I think its kind of silly that DTS works and DD doesn't.
