How is the Playstation 3 at playing DVDs?
I picked up a Playstation 3 a couple of weeks ago (bundle deal) but won't be opening it until Christmas.
At the same time I picked up a Sony DVD player, DVP-NS710H - I needed something around $50 to get me over $1,000 so that I would get three years of zero percent financing.
From sony's website:
Now I'm wondering how the Playstation 3 is at playing normal DVDs. Do I even need this upscaling DVD Player? My TV is a 46" Sony 1080p, 120Hz TV (46V5100). I have already picked up the Sony PS3 BD remote control ($20).
If I use this on one of my 27" CRT TVs, will it look good or will the higher resolution look bad for some reason?

If your talking about using the PS3(on the 27") it doesn't matter the picture will downconvert the picture. With the regular dvd player won't matter it won't play BD movies?

It's great for BD, but for DVD its missing a basic feature found on even the cheapest DVD players these days: watching a DVD and stop it for the night? The next day when you boot up the PS3 it won't remember where you were on the disc.

Mine remembers where it is if I go back the next day...odd.

Not true as of a firmware update YEARS ago (1.51 I believe.) For blu-rays it is quirky, but DVDs it remembers, even if you remove the media.

Hmm... OK, sounds like the PS3 is fine for DVDs, I'll plan on using it as my primary Blu-Ray and DVD player for my 46" LCD TV.
I'll probably just use the Sony DVD player as a normal DVD player for my 27" CRT - it wasn't that much more than an non-upscaling DVD player.
Thanks for the information!

Just make sure you're using an HDMI cable to get the most out of your PS3. I've had mine since October 2006 and haven't looked back. In fact, in March I'm buying a PS3 320 GB slim and moving my original to the family room.

I think it'll work for some of the more basically encoded BDs but the Enhanced 2.0 spec ones, or BD-Live, or whatever, don't seem to work well with this feature.

That's because BDs have actually used all the little features offered by the tech, like blocking your control over them. DVDs historically have done some trailers that were difficult to skip past, but otherwise haven't really messed with anything, so the player can control them. Bluray has been different. It's annoying. But you can't really blame players. Much.
