Ok, perhaps I'm not understanding something. Here goes, I'm seeing posts where people are spending upwards of 2000 dollars on Sony Wega 4:3 TVs(as well as people buying big screen 4:3 tv's). I've seen a Toshiba 16x9 40" set for 2000 dollars. Why are people spending more for a 4:3 set? Am I missing something or are people not aware they can get a 16x9 set so cheap? Any clarification would help.

The sonys can switch to 16:9 if a dvd with that format is played... so its both a 4:3 and a 16:9... also, i dunno about the toshiba, the WEGA is a Flatscreen TUBE TV, not a RPTV, which gives it sharp and vibrant colors...

The new Wegas are definetely not both 4:3 and 16:9. They just have a new feature that plays anamorphic DVDs without the clarity and detail loss of other 4:3 TVs. If you are going to spend $1800 or higher, go with a Tosh. I personally don't have one (yet)but I have a friend on this forum who does and its the only way to go with that kind of money.

I seem to recall the Toshiba's being HDTV Ready. Are the Wegas HDTV Ready?

The XBR Wegas are HD Ready. The new ones aren't out yet, but they should be out soon, and they come in 32" and 36" sizes.

Doesnt HDTV ready mean that it has some kind of support for 16:9??? I saw a toshiba that was HDTV ready and it was DEFINITELY 16:9 supported... Coz HDTV is not your standard cable 4:3, it is 16:9... aint it? http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/confused.gif

There are several HDTV-ready sets that are 4:3 such as the new XBR Wegas. However, the Wegas are 4:3 ratio screen size, not widescreen. So, in another words, you will not be eliminating the black bars on a 1.85:1 on a Wega like a true 16:9 set. I hope that answers your question. I'm not entirely sure what you are asking though--sorry.
