Looking for a region-free DVD player.
 

I'm in the market for a region free DVD player, but I don't want to pay over $40-$50 for one. Can you guys recommend decent players within that price range?

Try the Philips DVP642. Pretty solid all around. I've had mine since 2005 and it's a great reliable player. Older model, but it's in your price range.

Before you go out and buy another player, I suggest you firstly do a search for your player model and brand on http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks

By activating the code (If you can find it), you can convert your existing player region-free.

I actually use my PS3/360 to watch movies. I'll look into that Phillips player trespoochies. Thanks.

The 642 is an old player. Try the 5990. I bought mine from dell for 54.11 shipped when they were having free shipping. It has USB, (Fat 32 only), HDMI, supports more file formats such as wmv to an extent, etc...http://blog.techflaws.org/2008/11/01...3260-5990-faq/

I applied this firmware to my 5990 and it is good. Supports long file names and jpg slideshow is sooo much faster than the factory firmware. Most, if not all, Philips players can be made region free. Look at videohelp as T-900 states.
