Hey guys, I have a Sony STR-DE835 receiver, a Toshiba SD3109 DVD player, and a JBL 15" powered sub. I can hook the subwoofer up to the stereo outputs on my 3109 for movies, but I am looking for a way to hook the sub up to my amp outputs so I can use it for all sources. The amp has a subwoofer out(actually, two diff outputs, but I'm not sure which one to hook the sub to). I have tried hooking up the sub to sub outs on the back of the receiver in countless ways. I have to hook my sub up using the receiver because it is about 25 feet away and I only have one long set of patch cables. Can anyone suggest scenarios or other problems I might be missing? I know the sub works, but I just can't get it to work when it's hooked up to the receiver. Thanks!

Many recievers let you specify which speakers you have (for exmaple, I can tell my receiver I don't have a sub or rear speakers, and it won't output to them, it will just remix those sounds into the front channels). Make sure yours knows the sub is active.

Bad cables maybe??
Does your sub have a setting for always on vs. auto on??
You should be able to check voltage at the sub outputs on the receiver, but I don't know what the output should be???
Maybe someone smarter than me can tell you how to determine if the output jack is getting a signal.

I have the STR DE925. Either one of the sub outputs is fine. Make sure that:
The sub set-up on the reciever is ON.
The effect for the sub on the reciever is at +10.
Double check every setting on the sub.
Check your RCA cable for irregularities (I'd try a different one myself).
If all else fails try hooking the sub up using the speaker connections.

If you can, set your decoding to AUTO FORMAT DECODE, and not anything like 2-channel stereo. They should move the bass through the subwoofer output.
Also, set your front speakers to SMALL.

Is the sub 25' from the receiver or the speakers?
It sounds like your sub out from the receiver may be defective. Move your sub closer and test with another rca wire (any will do). I can't think of a reason why the rca cable would work from the dvd player and not from the receiver, but you should at least rule this out.
You will probably either have to repair/replace the receiver or wire the sub through speaker wire.
The speaker wire method would provide the same results as the sub out method as long as you specify the fronts to play all bass.

Thanks for all your suggestions guys, I'll let you know if any of this works. Also, anyone know how many mA(assuming this is the correct unit) are supposed to come out of the pre-amp outputs? I have an amperage tester, but I don't think it's sensitive enough to pick up anything from the pre-amp outs. Thanks.

Thanks, I had that on, but while I was tinkering with it, I found that the auto-on feature on the amp was disabled. It works now, thanks for all your suggestions and help everybody!
