I have a toshiba SD-3109 and am looking for an inexpensive receiver. Since my player already has 5.1 and DTS decoding can I just settle for a receiver in the 250 price range (sony, etc) that only has 5.1 channel input? Am I missing something here? Seems like the higher end models (de835,935) are 100-200 more and only have decoding as additional features.......
Thanks,
Bill

Bill - the one thing that I can think of that your missing is that down the road when all audio sources are offered in a Digital Surround format (HDTV, DSS systems, etc, etc) You will need the reciever to decode the signal.

NO - the 3109 doesn't decode DTS, it just passes the digital signal. So you won't get DTS w/o a decoding receiver or separate decoder.
Also, an "upscale" receiver will sound probably better, smoother and more refined, since it'll have a quality processor. The tone controls (bass/treble)are another plus. Affects music more than HT.
Anyway, the Onkyo 575 is a great receiver w/decoders that runs $300 refurbished from Onecall or Soundcity. No s-video. Yamaha 595a can run less than $300. Has s-vid and decoders. Another great machine.
