indoor HDTV antenna - suggestions

My mom got my old Sammy hidef tv, she doesn't have cable and the antenna she's using is really not cutting it (she gets two over the air digital channels at the moment) - any recommendations, perferrably something not TOO expensive.

I just got this one and like it:

It's not good if you want to just set it on top of the TV though, the way the cable is connected, it really needs to be mounted.

It kids of depends on where she lives, how far she is from the various transmitters and what the topography is like around her house.

The first step would be to go to www.antennaweb.org and enter her address and other information about your mother's house and see what it recommends. That'll give you an idea of what kind of antenna you need to look at --- directional, etc.

The best one is the one that works!

As Salty says, it is all about location, location, location. Use the antennaweb link to get you started, but basically, you just got to try it out. If it works, great! If not, return it and try another. There is no other way to "be certain" you will get every single channel with any given antenna.

And an antenna that doesn't work for you, might be the "perfect" antenna for your friend who lives a mile away. So there is just no way to say "This is the one you need to get for your house".

the location is Tenleytown DC essentially the highest point in DC where all the tv transmission stations are located - I don't know why she's having this problem with NOT getting certain stations.

Most channels in the DC area are UHF but ch. 7 and 9 are back on VHF, so you may need either a combo UHF/VHF antenna or two separate ones, one UHf, one VHF, in which case you need to get a joiner/splitter (UVSJ) or a diplexer. Right now, I'm using a Silver Sensor (uhf) and a pair of rabbit rears (vhf) ripped off my old 70's era Sony.

UVSJ:
