Hey Greg, Sound and Vision had an overview of the features of a stack of dvdplayers in their issue a month or two ago. MP3 support was one of the features they looked at. I'll try and dig up the article later tonight.

Found it, the may 2000 issue it was. Anyways here are the relevant players:
Apex 600-A: SRP $239
RCA/Proscan PS8690P SRP $499
RCA/Proscan RC5227P SRP $449
Revox s27 SRP $2,100
Samsung DVD-812 SRP $279 (says 711 and 612 models play mp3 as well)
Zenith IQDVC2350 (and 2300) SRP $399 (349)
I am sure you could add to this a number of players from SE Asia, but the many different repacking/brandings would make for a tiresome exercise to say the least At any rate its a feature which some of the manufacturers have recognized as having marketing appeal. Most of these units were not out at the time of publication so don't be surprised if specs/etc change. The apex does a reasonable job of mp3 playback, tho with some caveats, like the stupid file name/display issue. However the Revox s27 looks like a hot bargain with its rock bottom price of $2100
