Recommend me a good Home Theater System for less than $300
My home theater died on me, so I'm looking to get a new one that costs less than $300. I got a 42in Vizio 120mhz, a PS3 and a Toshiba HD-DVD player. Thanks in advance.

Oh...sorry...my bad...
Ummm...surround system for $300? Not going to happen. |

Spend all that money on a tv, ps3, and HD DVD player, and want a POS sound system to go with it? If you've been here long enough to have over 7000 posts, you should know better, than to think you're going to get a good sound system for less than $300.
Wal Mart has a DuraBrand system for about $69.95.......... |

I have a "good" system for movies. It cost about $3500, but that's cause I got most of it on great deals.

So something like these 2 Onkyo sets are not good?

By the way, i forgot to mention that I have a Dish HD/DVR reciever, so the set I get needs to have at least 3 HDMI inputs. |
Re: Recommend me a good Home Theater System for less than $300
The second one (ONKYO HT-S5200 7.1-Channel Black Home Theater System with iPod Dock) isn't too bad, for what it is. The thing most lacking with it, is the most important part of a system...........the speakers. The cost of that system, is mainly going to the receiver. You're pretty much getting the speakers for free.
The HDMI inputs in that receiver are for video "pass through" only. Separate audio connection needed for audio. Since there are no multi-channel analog inputs either, there's no way you'll ever hear the HD audio soundtracks from the BD movies, with that receiver. They are sorta ok, but not what you'd call good. Sorry......... |
Re: Recommend me a good Home Theater System for less than $300
And the 2nd one is pretty much double what you asked about. I think you could get a very nice system for a grand. Much better then you could have gotten for a grand even 18 months ago.
I saw a deal on the new Onkyo 507 that I almost jumped on. Something like $270 shipped. Put that w/ 5 of the Mirage Nansat at about $300 and a sub for $300 and you have a nice system. |
Re: Recommend me a good Home Theater System for less than $300
I could put a decent system together for you for around $550, no sub. Or $650 with a sub. Let me know if you can stretch your budget and I will give you the info.

Re: Recommend me a good Home Theater System for less than $300
It might be worth noting that the improvements with HD sound are not going to be very noticeable with this level of speakers, anyway. The downconverted DTS output by many BD players is still superior to anything stored on a DVD, and sounds excellent. Don't get carried away in hype.

I suggest you save your money until you can fork over at least $500.00.

With the 507, you can put together a "nice" system on a budget. But not $300. Check out this thread.
