Onkyo TX-SR507 - NEW!

Onkyo has come out with a new entry-level receiver that supports all of the Blu-Ray Hi-Res audio formats in 5.1:

http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=...s=Receiver&p=i

I was looking at the Onkyo TX-SR607 but I'm not going to use 7.2. And I can't get this with free shipping since I'm in Hawaii.

I CAN get the 507 with free shipping, however, and it seems like the big differences between the two are 7.2 surround, 90W per channel (vs. 80W), 1080i upscaling, and on-screen menus.

I have a very small room - only 16' x 13'.

I'm saving about $200 between the 507 and the 607.

Any thoughts on this?

Wow...seems like a good deal.....I can't imagine you really hearing the difference in the 10 watts. 7 speakers v. 5 doesn't do anything for me. I'm not sure the need for upscaling. And I certianly could live without on screen display.

Sooo...yea...I head over to AVS and see if it has decent sound as most Onkyo's do. If so, seems like a good deal.

This is interesting: since it has on board processing, guess not a big deal. But interesting is a connection they are dropping,

Like Sony's and Yamaha's receivers, you'll notice that the new Onkyos no longer feature S-Video inputs. More surprisingly, you'll also notice that none of the new receivers feature multichannel analog audio inputs, which seems to be the next connection type that manufacturers are dropping from receivers.

Re: Onkyo TX-SR507 - NEW!

I didn't even notice S-Video and multichannel analog gone. I guess S-Video is the odd man out because of the prevalence of component. I skipped over S-Video and went straight to component when I started getting into DVDs.

I suppose they also figure that an entry-level Blu Ray setup wouldn't need multichannel analog since HDMI is all the rage now.

Multichannel analog audio was never available on the low end. Dropping Svideo is idiotic if composite is kept. But I suppose it plays to the people who are most likely to buy this model.

Well true, but the thing I like is it is a nice featured unit that at least has a reputation for decent sound and quality. Low cost. Get this and a good deal on speakers and there really isn't a reason to look at the Htib systems. You get a nice mix and match system for the same price of a Htib.

I mean, check it out

Onkyo for $350 here
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...kyo-_-82120131

Mirage for $50 each for $250 total
http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it..._c=site_search

Base HSU for $300
http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/stf-1.html

So for $1,000 (I added a $100 for whatever), that is a very good sounding overall unit AND will do lossless for the "gotta have lossless" crowd!

(note, I'm just assuming the good sound of the receiver based on Onkyo's in general)

Yup! I'm getting a system very similar to this one. :)

What speakers did you decide on? Share.

One of the most common threads over here is "recommend me a good/inexpensive audio system".

I'd be eager to see some more reviews on this one.
I've had my eye on the 606/607, but I don't see myself upgrading to 7.1 or 7.2, so if I can shave off $150 and still handle BD audio....

I've settled on the Mirage Nano speakers. :) Now, I have to get rid of my current HiTB.

I know! $150 makes a huge difference! I love that the 507 has 4 HDMI inputs.

Unfortunately, HSU doesn't ship to Hawaii. :( I think I'm getting an Onkyo sub for cheap since I have very little space. I need to save up a bit more for a real sub.

Are these any good for an inexpensive setup?

While I'm not a fan of the Mirage, I'd get it over the Onkyo. I picked up an Onkyo as my first sub and it is really not that great.

Yeah, I'm expecting that. It's my temporary sub until I can save up for a good one. The thing that's getting me with other subs is that they're all too big for my small space.

How about this?...

I'll spend $100 more than the Onkyo for this Yamaha:

Damn Sdallnct, I tried not to do it but I ended up buying 3 Mirage Nanosat speakers. I actually was late, I checked them 2 days ago or something like that and they were $80 each. And a few minutes ago I saw them for $49.88 and I just couldn't stop. Those are going to be my new L,C,R (I'm upgrading from an Onkyo HTiB), so I should hear some difference.

I hope my wife doesn't kill me. :D

Not sure...does SVS ship to you? Course a lot more money.

I think there is an inexpensive Sony that gets a lot of play or something, but don't know if still available or the model.

Avoid inexpensive Sony receivers.

Yeah, the shipping is ridiculous. I went with the Yamaha. Hopefully, I won't regret it.

Way back when I was looking into a Sony receiver I was thinking about the Sony subwoofer. But when I changed the receiver I wasn't sure if Sony was a good way to go for a subwoofer. I've seen the Sony subwoofer go for $100 but I decided I could spend more for a good subwoofer.

I got my receiver and speakers from FedEX today:

This is cool. The speaker box was put inside another box with awesome padding for superior protection! :)

I'm still waiting on the speaker wire, subwoofer, and subwoofer cable to come through UPS.

unopened boxes are the equivalent of a kid's morning/anticipation on Christmas day.

so without the analog input how would I say hook up my Sony DVD/SACD player that uses the all five connections?
