Rain Man

I don't need anything fancy or heavy duty. I need a pair of stands, as compact as possible that can hold about 20 pounds combined and are about 20" tall. I was thinking of bench grinder stands, but they're a bit too large. Or maybe I could use some CD storage towers, but they would probably be too weak. Does anyone know of any inexpensive speaker stands or anything that would work as speaker stands?

concrete/cinder blocks can hold plenty of weight and should work fine, especially for the price.

you could make some out of wood and stain them or paint them pretty cheep.

Another idea is to get some fabric and cover the cinder blocks, so they look better.

These Wood Technology stands are sold in several retail stores but I believe it is cheaper to buy directly from them. However, building them yourself is by far the cheapest.

A few things to consider when looking for speaker stands...

1) the speaker needs to attatch to the stand with either spikes, glue, or velcro..

2) the stand needs to be HEAVY...CD-towers will probably not help the sound any. Most high quality speaker stand allow you to fill them with sand to add wieght.

3) The stand itself needs to be anchored into the ground. Spikes are best for carpet, or some type of isolator feet for tile, etc...


I know you're not looking for $200 stands, but if you're going to make one make sure it is at least HEAVY...

Here's what I did for temporary stands...(may have to buy more cosmetically pleasing ones later).

1. Goto a hardware store like home depot and have them cut some 1" pipe to length desired. Both sides of the pipe will be
threaded, so buy the female sockets for them.

(the come round or square you're choice).

2. Go buy some MDF board from a hardware store or car stereo shop (wood used to make
subwoofer enclosures). It's sturdy, thick, and cheap.

3. Go buy a can of flat black spray paint.

Now cut the MDF into squares...larger for the
base, smaller for the speakers, drill in the
piping and spray paint the whole thing. (or paint before if you want it to look better).

The piping is hollow, so you can fill it with cat liter, sand, etc, to make the stand heavy. You can get speaker spikes to use on the bases if you like. I also placed pieces
of dynamat glued to the top MDF board, then mounted my speakers with speaker putty (it's poster putty, so don't pay more cuz it's blue).

That's my recipe for speakers stands on the cheap.
