KLA HTA809 surround package w/powered sub for $259 shipped, http://www.800.com/prod.asp?T=242&C=309&P=1475

...or JBL ESC300 for $224 shipped http://www.collegiatemall.com/produc...300W&CA=&SubC=

I wanna keep it under $300 either way - can anyone give me any insights on either of these , or if theres something better out there in my price range. Keep in mind it's for the toshiba 6109c 50/channel

Thanks in advance!

KLH is dreadful.

IMHO, start with a pair of these:

http://www.paradigm.ca/Website/Parad...s/miniMon.html

Which will sound better than 5.1, 9.1, or
50.1 bad speakers. They run $270 street
and will knock your socks off with their
dynamics, tonal accuracy, and resolution.

Look in the Yellow Pages under "Stereo"
to find a local dealer, or click the
Stereo411 link below and enter your Zip
Code to locate a local dealer that way.

When you want to upgrade later, you can
move these to the back as surrounds.

I second that. The paradigm mini monitors are absolutely fantastic speakers in their prices range and they are very easy to power as well. The 6109 would do a fantastic job with them. I'd also suggest a pair of NHT super ones (more power hungry) as well as possibly a pair of Monitor Audio silver 3i. The later might cost a little more than the others but depending on your tastes could be worth it. KLH and JBL CAN make decent stuff but fact of the matter is they don't. Definitely get something a little more high end and build from there. In the long run you'll really be glad you did.

I would suggest finding a B&M store that has a liberal return policy, and start trying some out. When you find a set, return it (if you want) and try to find a better price online.

Don't take other people's word for the sound or quality of speakers. Everybody hears differently.

Good luck!!

I agree, don't listen to the most
highly-regarded affordable brands first,
listen to every random speaker in any store,
and keep returning them until you find one
you like.

Michael, I figured you would have to add your two cents after my comment! The average person would be satisfied with about 90% of the speakers on the market, and not just the ones you are pushing!

I would rather take the time and go my route, instead of listening to someone like you, who I don't know, and throw my money on a set of speakers based on your recommendation.

How do you know they would sound good hooked up to the 6109? Have you personally tested this combo, in his/her room? Each speaker and each receiver have their own distinct sound, so are you willing to guarantee your recommendation, by refunding his/her money, if it fails to meet their satisfaction...since you are so confident in all your speaker recommendations??

Reading reviews on "your" speakers are mixed (it gets good reviews, no doubt), some say they are bright and not much bass, and some say they are too boomy or bloated. Share your knowledge, what would the 6109 sound like hooked up to these? Why would some say bright, and others say boomy? Different equipment or perhaps, the difference in the human ear?

I get tired of seeing you push the speaker of your choice and cut down on anybody that recommends differently. I am not even recommending a set, and you still have to input your snide remarks. Is it because of our last discussion? Did I hurt your feelings or step on your toes? Sorry, get a life and get over it...not everybody likes the stuff you like!

Good luck, ban this, I would strongly recommend listening with your own ears and setup. Some online places are hard to return stuff and charge 15% restocking fees, so if you are unsure, research speakers, then go to a B & M store, take them home and hear how they sound! Just keep in mind, most people that recommend speakers only do so because they have that model (or brand) and think they have the best. Don't forget that the acoustics of your room will play a factor on your choice.

Sure, if they want average sound.

I'm not "pushing" anything. I constantly
list many models of speakers, the best
value of which, are often Paradigm.

If people ignore these models (NHT, Paradigm,
PSB, etc.), and just randomly buy anything in
any store, as you suggest, they'll wind up
with an average system.

However, after listening to the cream of the
crop models
, and they are still not
satisfied, then they should look elsewhere.

But to start in an abyss, and hope for
finding greatness, is an outlandish
recommendation at best.

You didn't give a "route", you said to
listen to any speaker in any store. A
person will never find the best sound that
way, and it will take months.

You also suggested they buy from a store,
decide they like them, then return them
and buy them for less online. That's pretty
shady to say the least.

No one has to listen to me, or you, or
anyone. This forum is for expressing
opinions, I expressed mine, you expressed
yours. I would hope anyone looking for
speakers would be able to discern which
input is most valuable, and act accordingly.

That's nonsense. I didn't "cut down on anybody
that recommends differently", but if someone
makes questionable recommendations, I'll
add my $.02 -- that's what discussion forums
are for.

Exactly.

Last discussion? My feelings? You've
lost me.

As for "getting a life", the only one who
sounds hurt and upset, is you.

My apologies if that's the case.

I don't take audio discussions personally,
it's not about me, it's about finding the
best sound, for the least amount of money.

FYI, I don't own Paradigm, or most of the
brands I recommend. I recommend what I
believe sounds good, within the budget
specified by the user (in this case $300).

Absolutely. And average speakers, in any
room, will yield average results.

I am not going to waste my time and argue with you about which speaker is best. It's pointless. The only thing I stated was to try out the speakers he is interested in, before he makes his final purchase (or one that requires a restocking fee online)! That is all! Did I say anything about your recommendation? NO! So there was no need for your snide comment about my post!

You seem to fail to comprehend the fact that not all people need the "best"! I am not going to waste my time dissecting your post, and placing all the quotes, and making my comments on what you said...

Once again, good luck, ban this....

??

I never said folks should buy the "best".

They should, however, want the best quality
for the budget they have allocated. To
not want the best for the money spent,
is unnatural. Everyone wants the best value
for their money.

That's a shame, why are you afraid to have
a reasonable discussion?
