hi. i've been looking around at 16x9 tvs, and they seem to be stupid expensive, but... i don't really watch anything other than DVDs, and it'd be really cool to see them in widescreen. Do you HT people have any suggestions? Is there anything I should make sure to get like HDTV or HDTV ready? I'm looking for something in the 36" area, I think 60" would be a bit obsessive. Where is the best place to buy, online or in the store?

I you watch mostly DVDs then you'll definitely enjoy a 16:9 set. Add a progressive scan DVD player and you'll be in heaven. The following are some prices that seem to be pretty common.

Toshiba TW40X81 around $2000.

Mitsubishi WT46805 $2700 - $3000.

Toshiba TW56X81 & Mitsubishi 55805 $3500-$4000.

Pioneer 510/610 $5000 - $6000. I believe Pioneer also makes other models available under $4000.

All of the above are RPTVs. People occassionaly get better prices, but I never was able to find any prices much below those.

Toshiba, Sony and probably others offer some direct view 16:9 sets, they're $3000 and up.

I'd check www.onecall.com and www.consumer-direct.com for an idea of web prices. They're both reliable dealers. Do some research on the local level, you may be able to find a deal close to web prices. Be sure to factor in delivery on web deals. Mitsubishi is hard to find on the web.

For the record, I have the Toshiba tw40x81, which is a perfect fit for my relatively small room. I love this TV, and would buy it again in a heartbeat.

as pointed out earlier, now I just need the progressive scan DVD. That's coming soon, baby, I can feel it!

I've got a Panasonic PT-56WXF95. Got it at www.wholesaleconnection.com . As far as I know it is the only one in a somewhat affordable price range that supports native 720p and 1080i HDTV. So far, I love it.

once you get in the $3,000 range, i would definately look into the sony vpl400 (can be had for $3000).

it is a FRONT projection lcd system that is 16x9 native, and will do HDTV as well.

What i like best is:

1. it does not take over your room (it's the size of a slide projector)
2. you can watch your DVDs on a 144" screen! once you've done that, there is no going back to a "mere" 60" again!

steve f & hellmutt hit the nail on the head. Toshiba has the most impressive and affordabe line of large screen hdtv's out there. I just got the TW65X81 for $4700 and it's as good as you can get for watching dvds. All the TW series tv's are hot... get the one that fits your space and wallet.

Good luck finding the Toshiba TW40X81; I searched for the last month and nobody locally or online had it in stock. I finally placed an order at onecall.com (turned out to be around $2300 shipped)...they're supposed to be getting units in anyday now.

I just ordered the Toshiba SD5109 progressive DVD player from 800.com of all places!

Your right. I had to wait a few weeks for both my Toshiba SD5109 DVD player and the TV... And most online vendors either are out of stock or lying about being in stock. Toshiba must be having a heck of a time keeping up with consumer demand for their stuff. Let the backorders speak for themselves... they're popular products.

If you want a great tv, get a Mitsubishi 60" HDTV 4:3 Platinum series like we did. Can't go wrong with that. They only go for $4k

But, then, that would not be a 16:9 TV as the topic is about 16:9. And, anyone who buys a 4:3 HDTV or HDTV-ready 4:3 is just wasting their money.

bossmonkey,

where is that sony front projector sold? I've only seen front projectors in the $5k+ range. Is this one considered pretty good? Also, is it LCD or CRT? Thanks
