Surround speaker placement advice for small room

I posted this over at AVS Forum but thought I might get some good advise here, too:

I moved into a new apartment with a fairly small living room. (11'x14') I'm having trouble figuring out the best placement for my surround speakers. I think I've all but ruled out rear surround since my couch has to be so close to the wall. I'm attaching a layout as it's easier than describing the room.

The TV is along the right wall, couch and chair along the left wall. The balcony is along the top so I can't block those doors.

I'm thinking surrounds above ear level on the side walls. The right surround I'm thinking hang off the rear wall but have it fire towards the listener. So I may end up with the speakers slightly above and behind ear level, firing at one another.

The other option is placing them in the corners and using the walls and ceiling as reflectors.

Thoughts?? Thanks in advance!!

Re: Surround speaker placement advice for small room

I have a surprisingly similar shaped living room and I have placed my surround speakers to the along the wall next to the couch on the left (top) and just behind the chair to the right (bottom) with no real problems with reflections or much bouncing about. I made the right hand seat on the couch the sweet spot since it sits right in line with the center of the TV. With a room that shape and that small, I didn't worry too much about everyone getting the exact same experience.

I'll post some shots of my set up if I have a chance tonight.

Here's some shots of my place. Hopefully you can get a good idea of where everything is in relation to each other:

That's a 50" set that's about 6 and a half feet from the back of the couch.

Holy shit, dude, that looks nearly identical to my place!

Thanks for posting the pics, I think that's what I'll end up doing.

That's what I would recommend. With a close back wall, put the surround to the side, as high as possible. If your receiver has separate distance/delay settings for each channel, you should be able to put them on the walls if you want.

Re: Surround speaker placement advice for small room

Already got the speakers. I just wasn't sure how to place them in the new room.
