I wa just curios the other day wondering if my reciever will handle the upgrade of a Blu ray player, ALL blu rays still support DD 5.1 correct?

here is my setup Panasinic 50' 720p
HK AVR 120 (supports DD,DTS fiber optic audio and digital)

no blu ray yet.

What about audio options like this DTS HD HR from The Incredible Hulk Bluray?

no.

PS3s support all of the HD-Audio formats, but your receiver must also support them, which yours does not.

alternately, if you had analog inputs on your receiver you could buy a Blu-ray player with analog outputs and let the player decode the audio and send it to your receiver.

does your player have analog inputs?

That's not entirely correct. PS3 supports all the formats but decodes them internally and outputs them over HDMI as LPCM. So all your receiver needs to support is HDMI audio input and multichannel LPCM.

I dont believe my reciever supports either. So what you are saying is WHAT?

what audio options will my reciever not play?
what will it play?

For instance The Prestige Bluray has English 5.1 uncompressed (48khz/24-bit) which I gather it will not play

and English,French,Spanish 5.1 DD will I assume it will play?

So what as long is it state English,French,Spanish 5.1 DD Im ok?

You're OK pretty much any way you slice it. With my Panasonic Blu-ray player for instance, Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio are essentially downconverted to the equivalent of full-bitrate DTS for my receiver to decode.

Blu-Ray requires either a regular Dolby Digital, DTS, or PCM track. The HD tracks are all optional. I know that DTS HD tracks all contain a regular DTS track as the core, so they are all backwards-compatible. I believe the same is true for Dolby. So the simple answer is you should be able to play whatever you like and your receiver will play back the bit it supports.

And even if it doesn't support HD audio, the lossy DD and DTS tracks are encoded at the highest possible bitrate so the sound will still be superior to DVD and to most ears indistinguishable from the lossless track.

alrighty thats what I neede to know

I have a AVR 120 as well. I have a Toshiba HD-A3 hooked to it in the living room. Well sort of. HDMI goes directly to my LCD flat panel and optical or coaxial to the receiver.

I have a AVR 135 in my media room with a PS3 hooked to it (again sort of, I have HDMI from the PS3 to a HMDI switcher then optical or coaxial, I can never remember) to the receiver. I actually have 6.1 set up in here.

Yes, of course I know I'm not getting lossless and all. But I'm happy with the sound. The H/K has such a nice sound, I'm very happy with it. I don't have any immediate plans to "upgrade" to lossless. Not at least till I can upgrade speakers.
