So, did I just narrowly avoid a disaster or did I actually do something stupid?

It hasn't been delivered yet, so I'm waiting for the moment of truth.

No video games, just lots of NTSC DVD and Blu-Ray. And I hate watching 4:3 stretched, so I'm worried I may have just traded fear of blurred moving images for fear of vertical bar burn-in.

With tax and delivery, the Sony was a little over $2000.

yep, could have easily gotten a 50" 1080p panny plasma for under 2k
but with the money you saved on that 42", you can just hook up some other components

Good choice, unless you're watching TV with some giant windows and sunlight streaming in all the time.

Yeah, if that's the situation, nothing will work.

Nope. I usually watch with the lights dimmed or, if I'm watching a bunch of movies in a row or a whole season of a TV show in one sitting, entirely off.

Now if only my third-rate evil cable provider (Look Communications) offered HD programming, I'd be all set.
