Ok, DVD Talkers...need your help.

I just bought a new place and the TV is currently mounted above the fireplace. This is not my TV, (well the guy threw it in - but I will probably be moving my Samsung 42 Plasma in that spot - and moving this Sony to the bedroom)

I need advice on where to put my HT gear. I have the basics - HD cable box, HD DVD player and Receiver.

What is not visible is an existing rack - with a cable box in it. Its not visible its off to the right and higher than the TV at this point. Any ideas on how to expand this rack, replace it and where should I put the subwoofer???

Around the corner is my bedroom ..I could conceivably out put the sub around in that room - would it still be effective?

Any advice on mounted racks ...recommendations, would be appreciated.

I wish you luck I have no suggestions. I cringe everytime I see a tv over a fireplace as this screams designer HGTV type room where we have to hide everything and turn the tv into a piece of art.

The question, I guess, is, what's more important for you: the looks or the sound?

You need the sub in the HT room. You need the speakers there. For a good home theater it doesn't matter where you put the equipment rack.

There are two reasons I don't like TV's over the fireplace; one is it puts it too high IMO, the other is where the heck do you put the stuff? I wall mounted my TV as well, but other than making it neater with no visible wires, you still need 24" of storage for the components.

I don't want to sound like I'm bashing so I will recommend keeping the sub in the same room

I think it only works for people who have the room to make it work. I just happened to have a closet right next to the fireplace so I ran everything above the mantle behind the sheet rock and into the closet. I am ordering a door from home depot that comes with a light switch that makes the glass see through when you turn it on.

I am also adding some fans to the inside to keep everything cool(ish).

My mantle is less than 5' high so the height doesnt effect me much.

Ideally, the center of the tv screen should be eye level, when you're sitting down. So, I agree with Brian. Over a fireplace is for design sake, not practicality. I've never understood why people do that. It would put a crick in my neck, to watch one up there....

If you get an RF remote, you can put gear anywhere, but speakers and sub need to be in same room as tv.

This item is absolutely amazing if you want to hide your gear. I have my tv on a book shelf in the family room and my cable box and dvd player in the basement. I cut a hole beneath the built in and ran the wires in the back up to the tv.

Agree 100%. And as others have mentioned, it also just seems too high (I agree with the whole "eye level while sitting down" deal).

I do wish I could have something like a "media closet" though (mostly to keep everything away from my 2 year old ). That remote control extender looks interesting though. Maybe I'll be able to rig something up if I use that.

As for the remote extender, you simply change out one battery in your remote with their battery and presto, IR transmitter becomes RF.
