Pioneer Stopping Production of Plasma Panels

Say it isn't so. Apparently they'll still be releasing sets, but outsourcing the panels. This really is a bummer since they had the best black levels. My plan was to go with a Panny/Samsung for now, and then in perhaps 3 years pick up one of their new sets with the ultra black technology they demostrated this year at CES.

Wow. What are they thinking?

It takes years to build a reputation, but it will take one bad panel to completely ruin it.

Sounds like they are going to be getting their panels from panasonic (and others?). Panasonic makes really nice panels and if they worked together as suggested in the article that may lead to even better plasmas.

LOL. I should have read the article.

Wonder if the pricing is going to be on par with the Panasonics now....

Hard to tell. I was doing some more reading last night after posting this and it appears while the glass would come from Panasonic (or possibly others), the processing and electonics would still be handled by Pioneer.

How much of a panel's picture quality is tied to the glass v the electronics? How much percentage (not area) does a glass contributed to the makeup of a panel?

From the above article is sounds like the entire panel would be from other companies. I guess it gets down to the definition of a panel. Where did you read about the glass only thing?
