Best upconverting dvd player?
I am disappointed in the ps3's ability to upconvert standard dvd movies. Can anyone make suggestions on which stand alone upconverting dvd players work the best? And I am looking for the reasonably priced ones $200-$300. Thanks for any advice.

Toshiba A-35 is probably your best bet in that price range. It's on Amazon for less than $230, plays HD-DVD, and comes with 7 free HD-DVD's (Bourne Identity and the 300 in the box with the player, and 5 free that you send off for). Best Buy has a deal where you get 9 free HD-DVD's (any two under $35 right at purchase, Bourne Identity and the 300 in the box, and 5 free that you send off for). Can you get the Denon for that price? If so, I'd look there.
I have no experience the Oppo. But have read a lot about it.
For less then half your budget, I'd consider the Toshiba HD-A3. I directly compared it to my Bravo D1 which is an excellent player, and could not really see a difference. And every time I thought I saw something I liked better on the D1, then I saw something I liked better on the A3. And at around a $100 it is simply a steal (plus 7 movies).
Oh and I have direct compared my PS3 up converting to the A3. I'm surprised you say your disappointed in the PS3. It does a "nice" job. The A3 is better. Mainly in the 3-d effect you get. It seems to have more depth and warmth then the PS3.
I was so impressed with the A3, I bought another one. So now I have one in my theater room (sitting next to my PS3) and one in the living room. I bought the 2nd one right after x-mas, so I could have sent it back. But I really bought it for SD DVD's and only paid like $130 for it, so I figured I couldn't find a better player in the that price range, so kept it.
Oh, I only gave up on the Bravo as it started getting flacky. Thought about ordering a new drive for it, and still might to have as a back up. But while it shows and excellent image (and doing the mod was easy), it worked well for a year and then started having trouble with some discs. Now about every 5th disc won't play unless I do a little song and dance for it (eject it, power down, power up, play).
