Question about my receiver (SS)

My new HDTV (52" Sony Bravia) was delivered yesterday, and the people who delivered it, hooked up the upconverter, cable box and surround sound receiver.

But, someone came in to look at it, who claims to specialize in this hardware. He said that because the receiver is analog, you can't use the optical cables to hook into the TV. Intead, we need RCA cables and we need to hook them into the upconverter instead.

I know nothing about this stuff, and I'm trying to see if he's just trying to get money for doing something, or if this is really true.

Can anyone give me some insight? (Please try to explain it in the simplist terms possible..:) )

do you have optical / coaxial inputs on your receiver? Is it 5.1? If so, then you can.

DVD Josh will make fun of me, but it would help to know your receiver's brand and model number. We have no way of knowing what equipment you have.

Also, what is an "upconverter" in this context? What is it upconverting?
