Help!! No Disc message on Blu Ray player
Hello to all
I have the Sony S-300 BD player
I have watched 5-6 movies with no problem. I put War in today and it started playing fine. I pressed stop to run and do something. Went to start back up and NO DISC appears on screen and player.
I have tried several movies in it now and they all say NO DISC. I even unplugged unit for 30 seconds did not help.
Thanks, Beau
Please help

I assume you have the latest firmware for this model correct? If you do then this sounds like you would have to exchange the player or take it in for repair assuming it's under warranty, especially since you already tried a hard boot.

Blu Ray is a new technology. Still alot of kinks to work out. Often when new movies come out, they have compatability players with certain players.
Update the firmware, and you should be able play the movie just fine.

Ok, I missed the part where he said other movies stopped working. I thought it was just the one that wasn't.
Agreed, it might be a unit issue.

Beau - honestly it sounds like firmware is not the issue here. Even if your firmware needed an update, it should play movies that it previously played.
Let me ask you a question - when you pushed stop during war did you push "stop" or "pause" I have found that pausing something for a long time can screw up a laser or the disc mechanism because the disk continues to spin. Especially when you are dealing with first gen technology, this can be a problem.

Yes, I did have it on pause when problem started. I did not think that would cause a problem though. I guess maybe it did.
I tried regular DVD's also. Still same NO DISC message
Should I just go and buy another player and swap the good 1 out for the bad 1 and start over fresh?

Yea pause is not a good thing. You probably misaligned the laser or just burned it out.
I don't condone that kind of "retail swapping" it borders on fraud..but I guess to each their own. You may able to get it serviced via warranty as well..just tell them it stopped working.

I just got the unit for Christmas, so I only had the unit for 2 weeks and have box and receipt.
It says I have 90 days to return unit if there is a problem. That is still legal right?

Yeah go ahead and return the whole thing, you are good to go.
I thought you were talking about "switching" - the whole switcheroo thing that is retail fraud. I thought you were going to buy a new one, put the old one in the new one box and then return it.

OK, I called Sony and they are sending me a new firmware disc, should be here by friday.
Do I just put it in player and let it work its magic or do I need to do something else?
How long does it take to fully update?
What will this improve on the player?
Thanks

Can't speak for firmware updating on a Blu Ray player but doing updates on an HD-DVD player I assume is the same. Just insert the disc and a message should come on the screen asking if you want to update. Select "Yes" and it should (again, based on my experience with HD-DVD) take around 40-minutes (though it could be a lot less on a BR player).
But the thing is, if the it won't play BR or even regular discs, will it even read the firmware update disc?

OK, got the firmware disc in mail from Sony. Installed it and version says 3.70 which is what it is supposed to so everything is good.
What will this update do for the player that i will notice? better sound, picture, or faster responce?

Nothing, other than make the machine have less issues with some of the newer releases.

Hello! I'm new here and this is actually my first post. I have the same player. I am having a simillar (but not as severe) problem. I have put two (actually 3) discs give me problems this week:
-Two copies of The Getaway (both from netflix).
-A Used copy of Speed that I bought today.
With all of these discs, I get a "can't play this disc" (instead of the No disc message the thread creator is getting) message on the player. If I try again...the disc will load and begin to play (Speed takes alot longer...and sometimes I have to try it 8 or 9 times before it will work). After about an hour the discs all freeze. Speed actually froze to the point where I had to unplug the player for a second to get it out. I am on 3.7 firmware. I also should mention that the first copy of The Getaway and Speed both looked perfect, like new...no scratches or anything. Anybody have any ideas?
