Can any of you recommend a decent 42'' LCD HDTV for my parents?

Alrighty, my parents are looking into buying an HDTV, but I don't know much about them myself. They would likely want one that's around 42'', but they don't want to spend an arm and a leg - maybe around $600-$800 or so. Are there any sales going on, coupons or the such, to get a decent HDTV at that size for around that price?

I think you will have to go the off brand route unless you want to drop in size

The Panasonic 42" plasma can sometimes be had for $950 or so, and I'm sure LCD would be more, unless you get a 2nd tier brand or off brand.

$600-$800? that's too low for a 42''. Maybe if you look really hard you'll be able to find something.
Right now you can buy a 37'' Vizio LCD for $700.

In todays Office Depot ad, they have the Westinghouse 42" LCD for $850, which is a fairly good price. Not great, but pretty good. And for a 2nd tier brand set, I like Westinghouse. I saw their 46" set up well once, and thought it had a really nice picture.

Yea...Westinghouse, Olivia and Visio are what I consider 2nd tier brands (as opposed to top tier in Panasonic, Pioneer, Sony, Samsung, etc).

But Polaroid I consider a no-name or off brand.

I would consider buying a 2 tier brand, but never an off brand.

The thing is a year to 18 months ago there was a pretty large gap ($500 or more) between the top tier and 2nd tier and almost as large between the 2nd tier and the no name. But that has changed. When you can get a Panasonic 42" 720p plasma for a grand pretty regularly, it becomes harder to justify getting something like the Westinghouse for $850 (but $150 is $150). Or the 50" plasma can be had for $1,500 just about every day, hard to justify the 46" Westinghouse at $1,200. It use to be you save quite a lot of money going to those 2nd tier sets. You knew you were not getting quite the picture quality, but you were saving a lot of money. Now, your not saving the money like you use to. Even the Samsung LCD flat panels are really starting to come down. There were some terrific deals at Thanksgiving. And usually the really big TV sales come right before Super Bowl.
