dvd player won't play correct format

Well I've got an old school Tv with the dvd player built in. Tv/dvd combo It's about 5 years old so it's got a decent amount of hours on it. Well the other day i decided to pop in a nice sergio leone flick. Loaded fine and the menu came up so i hit play...I like my widescreen films i guess the whole " how it was meant to be seen" always gets me.

The good the bad and the ugly is a 2:35 ratio i immediately noticed that the picture was streched. My player made it a 1:85.... So i popped in a 1:85 and it made it full screen 1.33...My laser can't be dirty because i doubt it would change the aspects. Is this a sign that my toshiba is hitting the fan? Any advice for me? thanks

...but did you double check your settings because maybe for some reason your player lost it's settings memory.

Exactly! Make sure your DVD player Aspect Ratio is set to 4X3 LB "Letterbox"

If it is set to 16X9 everything will be displayed incorrectly. I'm assuming that your TV is not WS.

Letterbox Playbox Problem

Anyone have any idea why the playback on the Samsung HT-X50 doesn't show up in widescreen/Letterbox? DVD player is the only thing new. Same ole' TV, old cheap DVD player played letterbox. The difference is the old player was connected with "S-video" cable. The new player is connected with standard "RCA" video cord. The DVD's I've used for tests are purchased "widescreen" format ONLY. It is a DVD player setting, but I can't figure out what setting to change. The owner's manual says you can change it in the player's menu, however the ratio selection in the player's menu is not selectable (it's gray'd out). Does this have anything to do with the cord? Is the DVD player that smart? (to know how it's connected to the TV?)

I have the same DVD player. I noticed last week, dvd's were showing in full screen all of a sudden.

in dvd mode, eject, hit menu, go to video settings, change to 4:3 LB.

then watch your movie.
hope this helps, it worked for me!

1.85:1 and 1.85:1 Anamorphic will look different. This could be your issue!
