I purchased and have been using a Philips DVP5982 upconverting dvd player connected via HDMI for about 3 weeks now. Things were going smoothly until last night when mid-film the audio stopped working. I checked my speakers and they are not the problem as the the audio works fine when I watch regular cable television. Also, I do not think the problem is the HDMI cord since the video remained. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem with this player or can offer a solution. I am not sure if I have the receipt still or else I would try to exchange it for a working player. I did not touch anything that would change the settings mid-film. I was just watching it when all of a sudden the audio stopped as if it had been muted. I have since unplugged and re-plugged, turned on/off the player and the problem still persists. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: And now it magically works again after I unplugged both the player and my tv.

Problems like this can be difficult to trouble shoot.

First make sure all your cables are seated firmly. A loud portion of the film could cause something to vibrate loose and cause a loss of signal.

Second you could try to see if you could replicate the problem with different sources and even the same disc.

HDMI cables include audio and video.

^ I know, which I why I said that. If the problem was the HDMI cord being loose I would have assumed that both the audio and video would have gone.

An HDMI cable can have many problems. There could be a short in the cable, which interferes with the audio and not the video. But you said after you restarted everything, the audio was fine, so who knows.

However, I would experiment and see if you hook up your DVD player with just composite audio outs and a composite video or S-Video or component video (if you have it), and then find out if you experience the same problems.

So, if the problem persists, try NOT using your HDMI connection. If the problem suddenly goes away, you know what the culprit is. Of course, it may not be just the HDMI cable, but the way the audio and video and translated via the HDMI circuits.
