This is the TV I am going to buy next weekend.
Unless, of course you convince me otherwise. Massachusetts is having their annual tax-free weekend.
The unit?
Samsung HLT-5687S
Please tell me why I am crazy picking this model... willing to listen.
Thanks.

I like it, but I like the Samsung LN-T4665F just a little better.
The biggest difference is a one's a DLP and the other is an LCD.
Also there's a 10 inch difference in screen size and the 4665F has a 15000:1 contrast ratio compared to the 56 incher's 10000:1.
I don't know where you're planning on buying, but there's only a $100 difference between the two right now at Best Buy.
Samsung 56" 1080p Slim-Depth LED Engine DLP HDTV
Samsung 46" 1080p Flat-Panel LCD HDTV
I've seen them both in action and this particular LCD has a beautifully bright picture with exceptional blacks. I do wish I would've picked one up rather than the Philips I bought before I saw the Samsung 4665F.

Sorry, High...
I'd go the 56" assuming he as the room. It is very, very hard to "make up size". Of course I don't recommend getting some junk tv because it is big. But the Samsung is not junk.
Also, at 56" you may just start to really see the benefits of the 1080p depending on seating distance.
Nope...if you got the room, not trying to hang on the wall...I'd go the 56" DLP.

Great choice, TallGuy. My wife and I picked up the very same set a month or so ago and love it. The LED DLP is plenty bright, with no need to replace a bulb every year or so.
And if you're a tree hugger like myself, you'll be happy to know it burns a LOT less juice than other sets its size.
In all, there are a many reasons to love the HLT-5687S. Just be sure to look up the dedicated thread at the AVS forum for a few valuable tips. Here's the link.

Good call Sdallnct,
I totally agree with everything you said.
I really have a crush, (so to speak) on the "f" series Samsungs, but I noted the 46" in particular to stay in the same price range as the 56".
There's the Samsung LN-T5265F (52") That one's pretty spectacular too, but it's also $4000 . . . ack!
No matter the budget or space though, it seems like it's pretty tough to go wrong with any of the new Samsungs.

Just make sure you budget room for some HD DVDs and a player.

I've almost ruled out that older model, but primarily because I am so hesitant about buying on-line... I need/want the satisfaction of being able to go down to my local BB, Tweeter, or CC, and bang on the counter until someone helps me, or arrests me.

Blimey I haven’t seen a Betamax VCR like that close to 30 years.
Would you like a video projector with screen size image that would dwarf most? I’d save just a little bit more and use a regular TV for regular and a video projector for films, I believe prices have fallen in the video projector world while some still produce expensive models there is the affordable market place where you can obtain a real bargain.

Also make sure it can present a scope film no, that only really works in the cinema. Make sure it can present film without over scanning the image thus cropping off the at least 2” to 3” each side I have seen many so called widescreen TV monitors that have this problem, many!

Just got it home, the HL-T5687S... so far so good... although I really only have it set up via a standard A/V cable from my non-HDTV DirecTV tivo box... HD signal comes next week... so basically, I can only comment on the fact that it is pretty damned light for such a large screen! It is giving me some burn-in smell, which I will assume will only last 20-30 hours like a standard bulb projector?...

the deed is done!
Directv HD comes in next Monday... ugh, cannot wait...
as for now, watching SD signal via an s-cable, and it looks pretty darned good... upconverted standard DVD's with my current DVD player via HDMI cable looks amazing...
