My Panasonic DMR-ES20 DVD Recorder is driving me crazy! HELP!

I bought two of these DVD recorders open box at Circuit City last March and have had good luck until recently. I have always intermittedly had each unit freeze up when opening disc tray, to the point I have had to unplug the unit, allow it to reset itself, and then attempt to use it again. Now, I will place a disc in to record, the unit will count as if it is recording, and then I will attempt to either play back the disc or finalize and the display tells me there is nothing on the disc. I use Maxell, Sony, Nexxtech and HP discs. The only discs that seem to want to work 100% now are the Maxell's and the Sony's, but, of corse, they can be the most expensive to buy in bulk. I am just trying to tape TV programming and dub my massive sports VHS collection onto DVD, and all brands of discs had worked up til now on both units. I have used a Maxell laser eye cleaner, and, while it worked a month ago, it seems to be having little effect. Is there anything I can do?
