It's a nice set, but I am with a few on this board who think 1080p is still overkill at such a television size. Still, it appears to be a great tv otherwise, so if you don't mind spending more than a typical HDTV at that size (over $1000 more than what I paid for my Panasma 50" but it was a UK series), then go for it.

No, I was just kidding. I was annoyed at the fact that all these threads are popping up lately saying "tell me what to buy". Just getting old - that's all.
As for the OP, I agree with what DVD said. Seriously this time.

1080 is an overkill for a 50 in TV you think?'
I'm just wondering if I would be better off getting like a 60-65 in 1080p DLP?
I plan to play HD-DVD,Blu-ray,Xbox 360, and PS3 on it, so from what i've read it seems a plasma may be a better choice.

I have it and really like it (although it has only been a week). if you can into the panasonic direct website, the deals are fantastic right now (around $3600)

Max,
You will learn that 35% of the people and posts here are helpful. The rest are nitpicking thread-nazi assholes who overcompensate HERE for the fact that they have no power in the outside world, and cannot muster up the courage to say "boo" to someone in real life.

It's not so much that 1080p is overkill, it's that the marginal performance improvement is not worth the cost. I mean you're basically paying $1000 more than the lower model 50" panny plasmas. That's like a 66% upcharge for a 20% (subjective) better picture. And unless you're sitting very close to the unit (less than 8 feet) you'll be hard pressed to notice a real difference anyway. I'd save the grand, buy the $1500 panny, and put the extra money in a fund to buy a 60" plasma in a year or two. Then you put the 50" unit in the bedroom. Or better yet, buy the $1500 panny AND an HD front projector now for the same $2500. You'll hardly even watch the plasma once your eyes feast on the glory that is HD front projection!

And then you add to that calculation just how much you would actually be viewing true 1080p broadcasts or 1080p media. Most broadcasts are not even HD (TNT being the worst possible example in the universe).

Onecall has it for $2600, but and i'm getting it for under $2000 through a friend with a nice discount.
I just don't know if i'd rather have a 60"+ 1080p DLP

I love my 720p, or 1080i if you like, panasonic. If you are getting it for under $2000 then go for it.
I don't suspect any broadcast will be in 1080p for some time but at least you will be ready should that happen sooner than later.
I went with the 720 panasonic for <1800 vs the 1080p for $2600 because I did not think the $800+ difference was worth it.

I'm also in the camp that 1080p is not worth it in a set that size. However, if you can get a smoking deal or something, I certainly don't think it will hurt to get 1080p. With careful shopping you should be able to get the 720p version for $1,500 or so. If you can get the 1080p version for within a couple of hundred, then sure go for it. But, I would probably ask you friend if you could get a deal on the 720p and put the money towards something else.

I was one of those, "wait-the-format-war-out" guys, that thought the HD/Blu-Ray wave is overrated. About a month ago I got a deal on this set I couldn't pass up. All I have to say is when it finally got delivered & all hooked, up, it was worth every penny. Once I got done with the break-in period, & adjusted everything just how I like it, it is a true thing of beauty, everyone bugs me to come to my place to watch movies now, & I haven't bought a single standard DVD since I got this TV. If you can afford it get it, don't listen to the naysayers, the PQ is simply unbelievable, & Gears of War on this set needs to be seen to be believed.

To all 50PZ700U/58PZ700U owners, what display settings are you using? I just finished my 100 hours and wanted to get my picture to be perfect.
