probably stupid widescreen tv question
 

So I just got a HD widescreen tv and when I watch dvds on it I dont know what setting I should put it on to preserve the aspect ratio. Do I have to leave it on aspect and have black bars all the way around? should I put it in zoom 1? that seems to make the image fill the screen and keep all of the information. What should I do?

Set your DVD player to 16:9.

And your TV to auto. Or 16:9 if auto isn't a choice.

I'm not guessing. His DVD player must be on 16:9/wide screen/anamorphic/etc. Period.

Of course the DVD player needs to be set to 16:9, but Strangelove also needs to know the correct aspect ratio setting for his new TV. In my experience, different manufacturers use slightly different terminology for the AR settings of their TVs, so knowing the TV's brand would be helpful. With Sony, for example, the setting he would want is "Full." There is also a setting in the preferences menu of the TV that governs whether the TV will stretch 4:3 material properly, or if it will be stretched to fill the screen.

Of course, your DVD player answer isn't 100 percent accurate either. Some DVD players have more than one 16:9 setting to choose from. Mine does. In that case, Strangelove would probably want 16:9 Wide/Auto to ensure 4:3 material is displayed properly.

Well I figured out what I have to do from online manuals for my plaer but the problem is that I have a different remote then the one listed in the manual for some reason, one that lacks a set up button. I think the original remote is at my Dads so I'll have to get it some time. Thanks for the help.
