Good Universal DVD remote?

Allright, so in a fit of drunken rage I just broke my Sony DVD remote (boy they shatter pretty easily!).... is there a good universal-type one I can get or should I just fuck it and get the 2nd gen Blu-Ray player? (I was planning to wait till 3rd gen)

Still a little loaded, so watch the responses! No serioursly, any info would be greatly appreciated. guess this is why I'm still single... (but that's for another forum)

Any Harmony remote would be a good suggestion.

I have the 659 and it does everything I need it to.

Thanks, I think I'm gonna go with something a bit simpler... looks like remotes are pretty easy to replace, thankfully.

In that case, just pick up one of the $20 or so One for All learning remotes at Target, Wal-mart etc.

I have the Harmony 659 as well, and I love it. One touch button turns everything on at once. The wife & kids can even use it. I know you said you were single so I'll give it a ringing endorsement that you can appreicate. When I come home shit faced drunk from the bar I push 1 button and pass out with a movie blaring! Plus its one of the older models so you can get for next to nothing on Ebay or other internet sites.

Harmony 880. Rechargable battery, color screen, easy set up and use. Love it.

I second the 880 recommendation. I love mine (and so does my wife).

Depends on how much you want to spend, the best remote for under $25 (in my opinion of course) is the Sony 8-Device Learning Remote. I have two of them, and it is extremely easy to progam, and you can make it do whatever you like. And of course it is pre-programmed for all sony products.

Can also be found at Target.

Good call. Early units had some quality issues with the cradle and battery not sitting tightly, but it looks like these issues have been resolved. If by chance you have those problems, post back. I had them both and got them fixed.

Note, the web based software is very easy to set up for the basics. Yes, once the basics are set up it can be a little cumbersome going back in there for tweaks, but it is still pretty easy.

Also, depending on your settings and how complicated you want, it may take you a several times to get it just the way you like. But it is a very flexible unit. I even have it controlling my Lutron remote lights.

The IR eye has a very wide range. I have my projector over head and behind with my components are along the wall towards the front. I have never had it miss.

There are great threads for the 880 at both AVS and Remotecentral.

And another shout out for the WAF (wife acceptence factor). Before the 880 my wife wouldn't even try to start up the theater room Now she is the one that goes in and shows it off more them me!

This is an excellent remote series for the price. The VLs have been a very nice surprise. Sony used to make funky universals with bizarre traits and button layouts, these are very different.

Nobody likes the Sony Remote Commander? I've had mine now for 6 years and it was a well spent $100.

Another vote for the Harmony 880, even though the OP isn't looking for it.

I bought an AV3100 after drooling over them for ages. I loved the look of the LCD screen. I took it back after a week - it was way too big. I hated not being able to control it with one hand.

I've had an mx500 for pushing 4 years and love it. I need another universal for our living room, and am trying to decide whether to go with another HTM or to go Harmony.

You gotta look at the button layout, Scott. The Harmony does amazing stuff, but if you like that disc surrounded by transport buttons....well, there just ain't anything else.

Hey thanks for the responses guys... I haven't pulled the trigger yet.. what I'm really looking for is something very similar to a DVD remote...I don't see any with menu/chapter/next buttons.

I didn't really wanna reinvent the wheel, since I'm planning to upgrade the tv/player in six months...

Do any of these work with older devices where you've lost the original remote, and the original remote's button said something like "Channel set-up" or "Rec Speed"?

Harmony should be able to, although you may have to find the code somewhere for the oddball commands. jp1 would definitely be able to. A Pronto would also definitely be able to, or anything that uses codes like the Prontos and jp1 remotes.

One place to search for help or oddball commands is remotecentral.com. They have user files for sharing. Sometimes you can simply find a guy who had the same device and the same type of remote and use his file to program your remote.

I replaced an AV3000 with the Harmony. It was ok, but my biggest pet peeve was that I couldn't hold the volume buttons down, I had to continually press them over and over to go up and down.

I LOVE the Harmony 880. I plan to get a second one for the bedroom!
