What does it mean when people say 780 p. vs. 1080 i.?

It's 720p vs 1080i. The P means progressive scan, I is interlaced. Interlaced displays every other line, then fills in the odd lines. Progressive doesn't 'skip' lines, it goes from top to bottom, continuously. Progressive is 'better', but in comparison, you are only getting 720 lines of resolution, whereas 1080i, though interlaced, is displaying more lines of resolution. To my knowledge, these two are fairly comparable, given the progressive vs more lines formula. 1080p is superior, because you are getting the higher resolution (1080) with the 'quicker' scaling (Progressive).
